I think that a new Villager class should be added, their position being "Guard". Below are various different aspects of my idea.
What they will do:
Essentially, Guards will wander about the general vicinity of their village, as most other villagers do. However, these villagers have the ability to attack. However, they will be allied to you. Their job is to defend the village from mobs that are naturally hostile to you. They will not attack you. Mobs that are naturally hostile to you will also be hostile to the guards.
What they might look like:
I think that guards would look best with either a black or white robe and a black/grey apron, to symbolize armor. It's possible that their arms could be unfolded and they could be holding an Iron Sword (Iron because the most logical place they could've gotten it is from the smithy), but I think that them just doing damage on touch would be fine.
Attack and health:
Guards would technically be regular villagers that have taken up arms, so they oughta have the same health as other villagers. I do think it should regenerate, however, as they will likely die quickly otherwise. Their attack should be relatively higher than most hostile mobs, however, for the same reason.
Why I thought up this idea:
I'd really like to see some kind of possible mob vs. mob (yes, I count NPC villagers as a type of mob) fights thats don't involve you and are not started by you (don't suggest wolves, that's predator attacking prey, as the sheep doesn't fight back). I think that adding a "Guard" villager would be a sensible, logical, and appropriate way to do so.
If you attack villagers, do the guards become hostile?
They should.
I do think all mobs should be considered neutral to each other still because it causes a lot of problems otherwise.
What if you covered a guard in blocks and left a peep hole for them to attack then had a monsters come up and it's set up to where there is a row of guards and they damage mobs until they are almost dead(irrigation timed system) then you kill them at the end.
There are already mob farming abuses but I guess this would just add 1 more to the list.
I do think it would be cool if the villages actually had a defense and fought mobs.
After a day or so all the guards would be dead, so maybe guards spawn to a certain maximum and respawn if one dies?
They would have to drop no exp and when they kill mob it drops no exp etc.
I think they should act like pigman in the respect of betrayal, they attack you if they are in the immediate area if you attacked one of them. If you come back later they are neutral to you again.
