Notch has said he's adding mod support at some point, which changes the game even more than texture packs, so future hd support isn't that far fetched.
That said I kinda agree on your point about the graphics themselves. I never use texture packs higher res than 32x.
He may never have intended to add pistons to the game either, but someone made a mod, and he thought it was good enough to make vanilla.
TO me there are 4 main creative areas in minecraft. Actual buildings, complex redstone mechanisms, mods, and texture packs. There are always new ways to build, people always figure out how to do new insane stuff with redstone, mods are an amazing way to show of skill and creativity, and texture packs are the most visible aspect of minecraft. HD textures are just the next step in texture pack creativity.
Ok, i just realized i support this idea, but not exactly like OP. I'd like 32x skins, enough to put in detail, but hopefully not lag someone too much. And i think that a Minecraft Steve skin would be best if you don't want to view the HD skin.
just because you dont like it, does not mean that it should not be. There are WAYYYYY more people who like this idea, so you think that your better to decide.

Minecraft to me is blocks not low res sprites. And low res being the point of the game? I thought the point of Minecraft was allowing players to be creative in a world full of angry green things that want to blow up your creations.
Anyways... Who are you people to tell me at what resolution I should be enjoying my Minecraft?
I grew up playing games with low res sprites so there is no novelty appeal there for me. I do like some of the 32x32 RPG packs because they remind me of the good Final Fantasy games but there are some good 64x64 textures that Ive found as well.
Ive never seen the appeal of the super high res packs but if someone else wants it, who am I to tell them they shouldn't have it?
Dear god. Those eyes... those lifeless eyes... piercing my soul...
At most I'd say 32x, 48x, or 64x.
And your poll is biased. Fix it.
Also,

1. She is looking through your soul, noot into your soul...
2I know my poll is biased, i did it for the lulz, ill fix it if you crybabies stop whining about it.
3.Yes there are only a few more people, but people who voted no had invalid statements like:
-I dont like hd textures
-It makes things look ugly
-Thats not how minecraft should be
-Lag blah blah lag
I do not approve of this. Usually I am quite lenient but if you can't make a good skin in the default resolution I don't see why you should make everyone else have a hard time rendering you. HD textures are a hard thing. Why do you think most computers can't run games like Battlefield 3 on Max Graphics? These are not invalid arguments. Think of a larger audience. Only a very small amount of the Minecraft comunity actually browse these forums, let alone this thread. Have 20-odd people say "Yeah that's good" is not a proper way of showing the community as a whole, which is 4 million. Get at least 2.5 million votes on 'Yes', and then you can say the Community loves it.
EDIT: That skin also sort of sucks.I don't want a whole bunch of those, or anything like it, running around.
while i do enjoy HD texture packs. i think adding HD skin support will be a bad idea. standered skin are fine. people make some damn good skins with what they have.
For single player it isnt an issue, for SMP it will cause lag, with over 4 million people logging on and off Mojangs auth server it will have to take in to account what their preference on Skins would be on top of that once they are past to auth server it maining comes down to the server that people are connecting to.
say person A has an HD skin, person B logs on to the same server as A at that point its the server that they are playing on would have to make the change of skins from HD to standerd for B.
Mojang would have to keep track of who is using what skins on what server, when they log on and when they log off, so they when person B logs on the the same server as A Mojang auth server reads this and says "person B doesnt want HD skins, change display skin for A to standerd for person B, then it comes down to what about person C D E F... ect ect.
Dawn of nights, the fact that you wanted to post what looks like a legit suggestion but then you add a bias poll for "lulz" looses a lot of respect from a lot of people and the fact that you constantly acted like a arrogant child and never really showed anything to make the suggestion logical for mojang to do.
badwolf you are just as bad you havent said anything to contribute to the suggestion but instead bash every one else
Dawn for a HD skin it looks horrible, no depth, no fading, what looks like eraser marks for where boobs would be and the eyes dont look like they belong to the person.
Yes, but that would be bloody ugly implying it just resized the skins.
No, it would imply that other players see a different terrain.png file than you do. Their terrain.png file could have pictures of llamas on every block, but you'd still see the same thing, therefore making it have absolutely no effect on you.
I'm not sure what the problem is here. From what I understand, servers don't require you to give them your terrain.png file and then force everyone else to use the same file or something equally ridiculous like that.
I'm all for this, even though I find mega-HD packs disconcerting (give my my 32x32 tileset).

Lag is not an invalid reason.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
There used to be a picture of my main characters here. It's out of date and I can't be bothered to update it. Truly a shame.
Lance, Chris, Tallix, Zelek, Regon, Andire. Information about them can be found on my profile (WIP)
stop taking everything i type so seriously...
in case you has not had a notce, i like being funny, yes lag is an issue, but besides, this WONT EVER HAPPEN. I was suggesting an option that wont get considered at all!.
There is a mod for this, yes, but it hasn't been updated.
Lets say it like this:
1.minecraft is only a few days from release
2.The game is in code freeze
3.they are most likely done with coding
4.Notch wont consider it
5.I am more awesome and better looking than you

It's not arrogance if it's true.
The poll is biased. That's just a fact. Not me being arrogant.
What's arrogant about telling someone to fix a problem?

Bat Solo.
You don't get it. If your Minecraft client is set to 16x16, that is what you see, regardless of what others on your server are set to.
Google sampling.

The biggest issue with sampling is that it is not always right. Anyways, 20-odd people would probably have a slightly different opinion then the rest.
