Although I know the direction Enderman are currently being taken will neutralize most of their block manipulation abilities, it occurred to me that one of the things that's annoying about Enderman isn't as much that they can move blocks but that they do it for no reason.
Would it not make better sense to have the Enderman use their ability to, for instance, remove blocks from a wall as you run from them - or from the ceiling of an area that they are too tall for?
I often find myself currently just messing with Endermen by annoying a whole gang of them and waiting in a building while they do nothing.
Weren't Endermen supposed to be terrifying? Wouldn't that be terrifying?
They weren't supposed to be terrifying, they were made to be scary. You forget that younger players play this game. What do you think they're going to say when Endermen warp everything?
And to me, and to a lot of people, coming across one is already freaky as hell. They stare at you, and warp right behind you.
Plus, this makes them waaaay overpowered, almost impossible to defeat or escape. Things need to be balanced, not impossible.

Hmm. I have to say that I think I agree with this. As long as Endermen don't pick up blocks otherwise and are still limited in the types of blocks they can move.
For example, Endermen could move wood, so your log cabin is not safe from Enderman assault. However, they couldn't move Bricks, so hiding in your chimney might just save you. :tongue.gif:
I don't know offhand what the current list of blocks Endermen can manipulate, but I could see it potentially being reexpanded if something like this were added.
I like the idea of them only griefing to get to you when you provoke and then run. I don't find them creepy at all. This would be more fun than, them actually griefing on cue :smile.gif:Yes markus hits it on the nail!

Well, Neospector, I haven't played the 1.9 pre-releases to determine if Endermen have become a challenge with their doubled health (and probably adjusted AI) - but they're still currently easily circumvented by standing under something 2 blocks off the ground (like under a tree!). A lot of the aspects of the game I find would be pretty scary to younger audiences anyway - I still feel the panic of "OH MAN, THAT'S A LOT OF DARK CAVERNS..."
Then there's the concept of one slightly dark corner allows a creeper to nail you in the "safety" of your own home - creepers are still way terrifying just for being silent until attack (which has a chance to be lethal in one go). And don't forget looking out the window and staring at that frowning green face suddenly. Enderman at least have a noise and die in the sun, the rain, and water. Creepers wait.
Endermen are also passive until looked at - making them avoidable unlike actual hostile mobs.
And then of course if they were to be granted such a power, I'd hope they'd (actually) be rare to spawn.
endermen aren't as scary as many people think. i slain two with my bare hands(literally). this idea would be coool

Optifine is awesome!
Now, when can Notch start using 3D instead of linear chunks for minecraft? It would massively improve performance, and increase height limits by hundreds of times. There are mods out there that do that already.

On my SMP 1.8.1 server, they don't even work most of the time - I've looked them up and down and nothing happens. Even when they're angry, they don't properly change state to the green eyes and open mouth.

Not if they're still limited in what kind of blocks they can move. Besides, it's not like they're not already easy to kill.
Furthermore, nice avatar. :tongue.gif:
