Crafted the same as a wooden ladder, but with iron ingots instead of sticks. (Should be a much higher yield as well to be worth the 7 iron.)
Does NOT require a vertical wall to support it the way wooden ladders do.
Only occupies a small portion of a tile, similar to doors. Unlike doors, placing it on a floor tile should put it on the FAR side of the block, not the near side where a door would normally place itself.
Similar in strength/durability to Iron Bars. (Basically stone strength)
Basically I'm tired of my only option for ladders being a shaft supported by a column. That column gets in the way more often than not, and it's architecturally displeasing to me. It's hard to make something look symmetrical with that awkward column positioned just off-center. Maybe it's not as big a deal to others as it is to me, but I think this would be worth it.
If you have any other details to add in there, feel free. That's all I can think of for this suggestion.
Someone else suggested an iron ladder, but it's only purpose was for climbing faster, and mine doesn't do that.
EDIT: Other people's additions so far - Rope Ladders, and possibly Grappling Hooks.
I would rather rope ladders, which are used by placing a rope ladder block at the top over and over again till the ladder reaches the floor.
Honestly it's all a matter of what you're building, and what look you want to give it. A rope ladder is a great idea, but it wouldn't be suitable in a stone fortress the way an iron ladder would be. EDIT: An iron ladder would also be less prone to getting blown up by a creeper, if it's as durable as iron bars.
I'd like to see both rope ladders AND iron ladders added to the game.
grappling hooks, anyone? okay, serious now. I would like to see both iron and rope ladders added. Rope ladders would be made like rails, but with string instead of iron. They would be placed from the top down, only requiring the top block to be attached to a block. Iron ladders would be build from the bottom up, like the thread suggests, and not require support from blocks.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
I dont think it should be Iron. More Like steel Ladders, but nice idea
What would be the difference other than the name? All you'd have to do is make it three iron ingots down each side, with one coal lump in the center instead of the seventh iron ingot. It would make it less costly, but otherwise wouldn't change a thing.

100% agreed. Thanks for the imaginative reply.
And grappling hooks actually sound like an awesome idea. They could fire from a bow, stick wherever they hit, and drape a climbable rope behind them. And to prevent them from being -too- useful... have them disappear after a certain amount of time the same way arrows do.
