You no longer naturally sink while in water. This DOES NOT apply when jumping into water.
Swimming then functions like Flying: Crouch to go down, Space to go up.
The Story
So, I've been playing this game now for some time (like, a year), and discovering something new was rather shocking. In a cool way, of course. What I discovered is that you can swim down faster by holding the crouch button (just like going down while flying in Creative Mode).
I'm sure most people already knew this and it was the genesis of this idea. Given that you can swim down, why do you automatically sink in water? What I'm really getting at is why can't Steve tread water?
Given that Crouch is already used for swimming down and Jump for swimming up, I don't think it would be a good idea to add a third button to override the normal sinking mechanic. Rather, I think Swimming should behave like Flying. You maintain your current, in this case, depth until you actively try to change it.
No more sinking. Unless, of course, you jumped in. Then your downward momentum would be conserved, just like it is now, and you'd have to swim up, just like you do now.
Something like this would make chatting in SMP while swimming or building in or under water much easier. Not to mention no more mashing space just to stay on the surface.
Further, I know this has been mentioned before. I found some many month old threads on the topic, but necromancy is frowned on where I'm from.
Also, I know that this wouldn't really make sense for a player in full armor. Then again, have you ever tried swimming in full armor? No? Well, neither have I, but that **** is heavy and there's no way in hell you'd be able to swim any distance AT ALL while wearing armor.
Reading comprehension fail. That's what the OP is about - having to hold space is unnecessary and makes doing many things annoying.
I guess it depends on how much of a hazard water is supposed to be. Personally, I wouldn't mind this change, but it does devalue boats a bit. Treading water could consumes hunger faster though.
There's also the issue that when I dive into a pool of water, I'd expect to sink in, not hit the surface and stop. Maybe you don't start treading water until you hit space once.

Well, of course, I didn't say it would remove momentum. Jumping into water would still causing you to sink as you have downward momentum already built up. You just wont gain any more.
1. You don't have to mash the space bar button, you just have to hold it.
2. More than half of the game is unrealistic, and if you start drowning while wearing armor than you are stuck under the water.
Honestly, I don't want this. It would make building and digging under water more of a nuisance than it already is
1. That's completely beside the point.
2. I was making a preemptive point about the armor thing. Jesus. Put it in, get comments about "game is already unrealistic"; leave it out, get comments about "that's not realistic".
Since when is the ability to stay stationary a nuisance?
If that's not what you were saying, I'm afraid I don't understand your statement.
What I mean is that we already have to position ourselves in a certain area so that we can build on whatever we're making, so right there that requires constant sinking and floating back up. We already have to hold the space bar to float back up (and i'm not talking about staying afloat, right now that's not a problem). If we had to hold shift just to go down, then it would just add to that.

I'm afraid I still don't understand your reasoning. Yes, you need to press an extra button, but you have far more control. Plus, what if you needed to do something that required going left to right instead of up and down or staying in one spot?
I don't know about you, but the way I place my hand means I constantly have a finger on both shift and space while still having full movement control. If anything, I think having to press that button to go down would HELP you build.
So far, your only argument seems to be "it's not the same as it is now, therefore it's bad".
