So, I love the building part of Minecraft. And the adventure part is pretty well done too. But do these elements really combine enough? My suggestion: Enchanting EVERYTHING. Basically, blocks and items can be put in the enchanting table in stacks and mass-enchanted. They stack with themselves, but not unenchanted or differently-enchanted blocks/items. Here are my ideas.
Floating (blocks only)
Makes the block float. I think that blocks should only be able to float if there's something connected to it (of course, this will be a toggle feature, to allow current floating islands to work). This enchant makes floating islands possible in real-physics games!
Level I: Suspends itself in the air (Costs 1)
Level II: Suspends itself and all connected blocks in the air (Costs 7)
Conflagration (blocks only)
The block glows red and damages anything that touches it.
Level I: 1 heart (Costs 2)
Level II: 1.5 hearts (Costs 4)
Level III: 2 hearts (Costs 6)
Level IV: 3 hearts (Costs 11)
Scaffolding (blocks only)
The block becomes half-transparent and breaks instantly. (Costs 5)
Sliding (blocks only)
Moves a greater distance when pushed by a piston.
Level I: 2 blocks (Costs 2)
Level II: 3 (Costs 4)
Level III: 4 (Costs 7)
Level IV: 20 (Costs 25)
Barricade (blocks only)
Placing this block also spawns semi-transparent copies in every available adjacent space. Copies do not drop anything.
Level I: Copies are destroyed when original is destroyed (Costs 20)
Level II: Copies are not destroyed when original is destroyed (Costs 30)
Spring (blocks only)
Level I: Negates fall damage. (Costs 5)
Level II: Bounces you. (Costs 10)
Level III: Also sends you flying when you place the block inside your collision box. (Costs 15)
Offhand (Weapons and Tools only)
The weapon/tool is automatically selected when hitting a mob or breaking a block.
Level I: Normal. (Costs 20)
Level II: Only selected if the block you're breaking is sped up by the enchanted tool (no shoveling stone). (Costs 35)
Safety (blocks and items)
When dropped, the enchanted item is attracted toward the nearest empty slot (chest, furnace, dispenser, ...) within 10 blocks. It loads itself into the nearest storage space. (Costs 4)
Lashing (blocks only)
When right-clicked, the block is thrown, not placed.
Level I: 8 block range. (Costs 7)
Level II: 16 block range. (Costs 11)
Level III: Charged like a bow. (Costs 19)
Magic Tether (arrows/eggs/snowballs only)
A blue beam of light connects the projectile the the player or dispenser that was its source. It is not destroyed when it hits, and is instead sucked back into the source to be reused. Dispenser traps don't have to be constantly reloaded! Can be combined with Lashing. (Costs 50)
Not only does this add part of the RPG component into building, it also allows one to use blocks in combat! (Epic combo: 64 Sand with Lashing III, 64 Dirt with Scaffolding/Spring III, 64 Obsidian with Lashing I/Barricade II, Diamond Sword with Knockback II/Offhand I)
What do you think? Does anyone have more ideas for conducive enchanting?
Floating (blocks only)
Makes the block float. I think that blocks should only be able to float if there's something connected to it (of course, this will be a toggle feature, to allow current floating islands to work). This enchant makes floating islands possible in real-physics games!
Level I: Suspends itself in the air (Costs 1)
Level II: Suspends itself and all connected blocks in the air (Costs 7)
It already does that except for sand and gravel.
All blocks are connected by air, water, or lava.
I don't think you quite understand what I'm saying. Blocks won't fall if they're connected HORIZONTALLY as well as vertically. So overhangs and ceilings don't fall no matter what.

I was making a joke.
No, I don't like the gravity-effected block idea. I was too lazy to read the rest :/
But how would the game distinguish between a house's ceiling and a floating island? It would be like building a house out of sand.
And digging horizontally would be impossible.
