Ok guys, here it is.
Notch had said nether brick is not currently able to be crafted. I have a good recipe for it, I think.
What if netherrack could be put into a box of 4 at a crafting table, to make 1 compressed netherrack? It would basicaly have a darker red tint than regular nethrrrack, and a more solid color (less cracks) basicaly, after that, you could smelt the compressed netherrack to make it Nether Stone
It would take so much for one, as this stone will be non flammable, and have wood characteristics, making it a win win (and the nether wont be missing the resources much :/ )
We do need a way to get a steady rate of this, too.

Watcha think?
i think it should be the other way around, you smelt netherack to make netherstone which is what you described. then you craft it like stone bricks

I was going to say this. It would make it more consistent with stone bricks.
Smelt the netherrack into... smooth netherrack? smootherrack? rack? which might also be a nice building material.
Then you craft them the same way as you craft stone bricks with smooth stone, but using the smelted nettherack instead. this will make 4 netherbrick.
Compressed netherrack doesn't really make much sense im afraid. nor does smelting them magically turn them into bricks.

Naw, keep them un-craftable.
