I don't mind having trees float in mid air, but I think it would be better if you chop the stump and the tree just falls down. I know the leafs are still on the tree but when you chop the tree down they can all disappear. It would be easier then having to place blocks all the way to the top of a tree so you can get all the wood.
If the whole tree shifted down 1 block when you cut away the trunk, then you would just get suffocated by the leaves. If all the tree's blocks broke into their item counterparts when you destroy one trunk piece, then it would be to easy to mine a forest of trees.
I think the current tree cutting system is unique to Minecraft, and is one of the things that I think will never get changed.

As for the OP, the only reasonable adjustment I can see for trees is having the stumps drop like gravel, which still seems a bit weird, anything beyond that is just unreasonable.
