So I've come up with a way to work writing in books. I present: Journals!
First, you need ink. Simply brew any dye (including inc sac but not bone meal) into a bottle of water to produce a bottle of ink in that color (naturally, no white).
Next, you need a writing table. Craft three planks in a row in the middle, two sticks on the bottom corners, and in the top row from left to right a clock (optional), a feather, and a bottle of ink. This will produce a Writing Table (<color> Ink) or a Writing Table with Clock (<color> Ink). If you make one without a clock and want to add a clock, just craft a clock on top of the Writing Table. When broken, a Writing Table with Clock will drop both a table and a clock. When placed, a table will show the ink bottle with the correct color and a Writing Table with Clock will show the clock in the corner, working normally. To change the color ink, right click a bottle of ink on the table OR craft the table with the bottle of ink above it; either way, the color of the table's ink is changed and the previous bottle is lost.
To write in a book, right click the book on the table. For a new book, you will be prompted to put a title on it, which will be displayed on the second line when you mouse over the book, and in the color of the table's ink. After right clicking on the table with a book, the book is opened and can be read by clicking the corners of the pages (like many games). A new book starts blank, and there are a certain number of pages (8? 16?). But when you get to the end, there is a button for "New Entry". If you click the button, a new "journal" entry is begun with the day, and, if there is a clock on the table, the time (shown by a symbol of the clock at the time the button was pressed, as this is how clocks show time in Minecraft.) The area can now be typed in until the "Done" button is pressed and the entry saved. Each entry will be added in the color of the table's ink.
If you just want to read the book, right click while holding it and it will open so you can read it. You won't be able to write in it however.
When you want to store the book, right click it on a bookshelf. This opens storage spaces (2 rows of 6?) that are book only; they start empty.
To accommodate this, books will no longer be stackable.
TL;DR: Make ink, make a table, use a book on the table and write in it. Read it anywhere, store on a bookshelf.

Needlessly complex i think,
how about a special desk (that idea i like) that you could take books over to and use the desk to write (kind of like signs but with lots more room, titles, and multiple pages) the titile of the book would be its tooltip and then bookcases would act like a chest that would hold books. you could set up books to record data automatically from your "stats" page next to acheivements, alongside a few other features.
Heck yes! I FULLY approve this! There are a lot of book mods, but if you want to use them in multiplayer, it's just too complicated. Using them in single player would be more of a way to use up some free time, but in multiplayer you can use them to leave notes with mroe space than a sign. WHOO!!!!

As for the suggestion its self, I generally like it. Except the fact there is a bunch of threads like this.
