By liking this thread you dont necessarily agree with the specific examples I have given for technology appearing in the game, but do think technology has a place in Minecraft.
Heres my own magitech and space thread. Its not the best but Im sure if people elaborated on it a bit it would look alot better.
I would like to request that this thread be stickied please. I am not sure how to contact anyone so if someone could tell me how to do so or simply do it for me that is greatly appreciated.
Whenever a a technology thread is created, it is scrutinized by "its overpowered" or "it doesnt fit with the style". I say Minecrafts style is that it is quirky, and free and to the "its overpowered" commenters, its called STAT BALANCING. It doesnt take place in the middle ages, it doesnt take place in the future or the past. Its open to interpretation and in the end its not important. In the end its important to not limit what the player can do. The player has no way to fully take advantage and/or completely dominate the terrain around him. No matter how many materials you gather, mining takes time and isnt all that rewarding, the amount of time required for building and rewards for such are also puny. A puny being in diamond armor is still a puny being in diamond armor. Of course the player will be allowed to level up his attributes in the future; but still that mainly affects health and damage and speed, and I dont like the idea of the player becoming this all powerful god through it. The point to survival mode right now is nonexistent. Yes there will be quests and a sort of story to appease that a bit, but what about rewarding the player for his work? I think normally the player should start with basic materials and then exponentially increase his power over time, like a stockholder. The more you invest in a product, the more money you get to invest again and put more money to invest in the product and so exponential growth. Of course were not talking amoeba growth here. It would take a very long time to get some of these technologies.
Among the things that could be featured in the game are as follows: Automated mining equipment, automated building equipment, guns, vehicles, airships, space travel, and numerous misc. items. Also, one way to control the availability of these items is through exp. By using books in some way, you spend exp once for a said technology. More advanced technology would cost increasingly large amounts of resources and also exp, and for reference something like space travel would take the player an enormous amount of time to acquire. Thats just an example and do not judge the entire thread based on examples listed above. This thread is about whether ANY technology should be featured in the game at all. Whether it be magitech ,steampunk, straight scifi, or more of a present day thing.
Also on a smaller note, in my sig you will find a link to a book use related thread detailing how books will allow for schematics to be discovered without all the annoyin trial and error or looking on the wikia. Really its an interesting concept trying to find all the recipes yourself, but its asking far too much. Minecraft is already a time sucking and addicting game and not allowing the player to see the schematics in game in order to "enhance" the gamplay experience is very unrealistic to ask of the player.
Also mixing modern and fantastical settings is not a new concept, and most games, books, and movies that emphasize such a thing are very popluar. Some examples of movies are: Avatar, Star Wars (yes it is, think about it), and planet of the apes. Games would be: Star Ocean (prime example), Warhammer 40k (another prime example), Shadowrun. Books would be Michael Crichton's: Timeline (time traveling), Jurassic Park (sort of), and lets not forget the numerous Jules Verne books about time travel, and steampunk style contraptions.
Also here are some examples of just what technology could be in minecraft as far as power, transportation, and automated mining equipment goes. The last six are Yogscast for those interested.
Seriously, there needs to viewable crafting recipes in the game. Go support this idea. Also click on my profile to view my space thread under find content.

Didn't AnonTheMouse have a thread about this idea?

My thread is about technology in general, and also Anon suggests something a little different. He says you should have to spend xp ever SINGLE time you try to make a piece of technology. I disagree and think that you should have to pay for tech schematics as well as only once and using exp doing so.

I'm not really sure what you're suggesting. Everything from all the videos? As for recipes in-game, I'm for the idea depending on how it's implemented and have suggested something on the topic myself: Recipe Book

1Haus1 and I have some very different approaches to how technology in Minecraft should be handled, though there are certain parallels. We've discussed our ideas over messages, and I fully support having a separate thread for each, since I think it allows the relative merits of each to be discussed in greater detail.
Most modern technology threads are way over the top though. I've seen some about ak-47s, nukes, jet planes, ATV's, Nuclear power and what not. Like in the post above it would mostly be acceptable if it was victorian or steam-punk era guns,Air-ships or anything. Personally I see everything right now to be fit. The only thing I would like would be airships.

Minecraft isnt victorian, midieval, or whatever other false information you people have managed to get burned into your skull. Steve is a human, wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Also the stuff you make TNT with is called GUNpowder. Minecraft has no story, no setting. Its free and quirky and random. If there was a setting or story it would go like this:
Steve is drinking his morning coffee one morning when he is suddenly in this strange place. This is where your character first spawns. From there he discovers he has extraordinary powers, and his surroundings are very strange (they are made of blocks, and are not governed by normal physics). He can remove pieces of the land and place them at will, and... you get the picture.
Maybe this video will help you understand what quirky means.

Also, AnonTheMouse is a great intellectual and deserves more attention on his thread(s). Here is one such thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/742848-crafting-advanced-technology/

That said it would still have to fit the design style.

There are plenty of stickied posts in the suggestion section that dont actually suggest things pertaining to the game.
The reason this thread pertains to suggestions is because it discusses suggestion threads, and why they shouldnt be cast aside.
