No blaze rods!
I've spent HOURS for DAYS in the nether trying to find fortresses before. Depending on the map and your starting position, it can be almost impossible to find them.
Just using four netherrack to make 1 netherbrick would be good. Reason for the massive reduction in resources is that netherbrick is much stronger than netherrack, whereas the only difference between cobblestone, smoothstone and stone brick is aesthetic.
You shouldn't need anything except netherrack to make netherbrick, just like you don't need anything except stone to make stone brick.
Adding a smelting process would overcomplicate things, adding other construction materials would do the same. Also, the resource reduction isn't that bad when you consider a diamond pick with efficiency 3 (maybe 2? havent tested) can be used to instantly mine netherrack.
eg. get a diamond pick with efficiency 3 (which isn't really that difficult) and you can fill your backpack with stacks of netherrack inside of 10 minutes, taking care not to fall into a pool of lava might make it take a little longer, but basically 10 minutes is all you need.
Do we really need a recipe for netherbricks? I think netherbricks should remain as a item that requires a little work to find a harvest - not a item that can be crafted so easily.
This. Not everything needs a recipe. Having nether bricks shows you've done a little exploring (just like mossy cobble and cracked/mossy stone bricks). Once you find a nether fortress there is a ****-ton of them you can mine. It also gives people incentive to be in the nether and explore more.

If you consider a total of 14 hours for two fortresses exploring a little, then I'll have to agree with you.
Actually, the reason I posted this thread is because of the thread I provided the link for. And don't three of the recipes require blaze rods, which require you to find a nether fortress anyways?

SMP.
You may be fine off in your little solo world where you can infinitely expand the Nether in any direction you like to look for a Nether Fortress, but most, if not all, SMP servers limit the expansion of the Nether to save memory and, last I checked, SMP means "More than one player" which means that there is more than one person who wants the limited Nether Brick that is available.

I've never ever played the single player.
I don't really see the point. Why make something really cool if nobody else is there to see it.

^^ this. Yeah, I agree with it too.
Personally, I dislike all of the recipes. Three is the best.
A 2x2/3x3 of netherrack is fine. No need for the blaze rods/powder, and no need for the stone brick if the builders of the nether ruins had no access to stone.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Also Ewe Loon, I agree with you on needing recipes for Mossy Cobble and the different Stone Bricks. 4-9 Netherrack per Nether Brick, and 4-9 Seeds surrounding Cobblestone and Stone Brick for Mossy Cobble/Stone Brick would be awesome. Never did come up with a recipe for Cracked Stone Brick.
It doesn't really matter to me. But if I were to choose a recipe, it would be 4 netherracks alone. Absolutely no need for anything more complex than that, since netherbricks aren't that desired anyway.
No recipe for mossy cobblestone is needed. Just have moss grow from one cobblestone to another in low light levels when the cobblestone is next to air and water, with the moss more likely to spread when there are more mossy blocks surrounding it. It's pretty easy to code.
i like the first one the most cuz then u have to find a NEther Fortress once before u can craft the nether bricks on your own. otherwise it would be too easy to get them I think.

Well, you have to find a nether fortress before you find a blaze rod, and two other recipes require blaze rods. But of course, the recipe you chose requires the most fortress materials, so I understand.
I would want it to be crafted by placing one soulsand in the middle and surronding it with neatherrack. I would want to keep the recipe only neather items, no stonebricks and the like.
No. No. Netherbrick is a material that has worth because you have to make a portal to Hell, jump through, and wander around dodging Ghast's fireballs to find a Nether Fortress and take it apart. And to all those who say "But OMGZ it's so hard to find a Nether Fortress!!!!!1!1one!!1!" I watched a guy who went into the Nether for his first time ever, and his portal landed right below a Nether Fortress.

Why am I here when I could be a productive member of society?

It's not finding a nether fortress people don't like, but greifing it.

My server has a recipe for netherbrick
4 block of netherrack to make 2 netherbricks
but i would like to see an official one added to minecraft
same for the different brick types and mossycobble

Also Pxex offers a good suggestion.
