I think melon farming is much too easy. A single stem can provide enough watermelon slices to keep you from starving(under normal minecraft habits). I would like to see the time between appearance of melons increased somewhat, and the number of melons dropped from 3-7 down to 2-4 or so. The only thing keeping melons from being instant free health forever is they are not easily found. This is not enough to inhibit them from being vastly overpowered, as a single melon seed rapidly becomes a 20 plot farm that can easily provide 10 people with food forever, even if they are constantly sprinting, jumping, and getting themselves hurt. Discuss.
You do know that in 1.9.4 pre, melons only drop 1 slice.
I don't know if this is a bug or not but it really doesn't matter.
I am in the middle of the Hardcore Challenge somebody posted on here and I have more than enough wheat already that I will never have to eat anything else again.
I killed 1 pig the first night and got 2 chops from it. I planted 12 seeds that first night also.
I now have a farm started that will produce 1 stack of bread per harvest.
I found 1 of each mushroom the first night and have about half a stack of each now, just from converting 2 bones into bonemeal.
Melons are nothing.
You actually have to go into an abandoned mine to find the seeds, by the time you do that, you should already have multiple sources of food established.
Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.
ya well that may be the case but the bottom line to that is how hard it is to get the seeds in the first place. On singleplayer if you dont spawn in the items then it is very hard, where as on multiplayer you can trade to get the seeds. I feel they should stay
Now that you can breed animals (in the 1.9 pre-releases; no sense in asking for changes from 1.8 that have already been coded), a large animal farm can sustain you while providing leather or feathers. More importantly, you don't have to eat meat as often as you have to eat melons. A short sprint can drain your hunger to the point where you have to stop and eat another watermelon.
I only use melons as a mid-game food. At the start, I never have enough animals to rely on meat, so I eat mushroom stew, fish, bread, and rotten flesh. After finding an abandoned mine shaft, I start a melon farm and quickly switch to melons. Quite a bit later, I am able to start slaughtering lots of animals.

You forgot to mention that animal farms also give you XP.

Then don't farm melons... I like the current melons because I use them as building material...
I don't think melons are unbalanced at all. First you need to get into an abandoned mine, which makes them slightly rare. Even once you do have them they aren't that overpowered because they only drop 1 slice each (1.9pre4). After you go though all that the wheat seems much better to grow.
If you really think melons are overpowered then theres an easy way to fix it. DON'T grow any melons.
I think chicken meat should be removed altogether. My chicken farm can generate a full stack of chicken meat in under a minute and that makes the stupid hunger bar completely pointless.
/sarcasm (except the part about the hunger bar being stupid because it is)
People who say: "If you don't like it, don't farm melons" are idiots. This is a suggestion on how to keep the game balanced, if you don't like that Notch added plasma cannons made from dirt that do 200 damage don't use them.
How about still 3-7 melon slices/block but slower melon block growing pace (slowing down the rate at which melons appear around a fully grown stem, not slowing down stem growing).

I don't see the point, too. Any single one of the available food sources quickly becomes sufficient for the rest of the game. To really balance food altogether you would need incredibly low growth rates, but then starting the game would become impossible at some point.
Melons are pretty rare. Once you find them, it's your treat, and it's not very overpowered. They drop like 3-7 and heal 1 heart. Realisticly, if you eat one whole melon, you'd probably be full.
Because of the fact that the heal so little per food item, that makes them less powerful the items like bread or meat. Because of the difficulty in finding your first seeds, the fact that they produce slightly more food per square of land then wheat is not important. Also in 1.9pre4 melons only drop one slice, they are actually worse as a food item then wheat. Therefore melons should be kept at the same level. I do not support any nerfing of melons.

If you don't like the dirt plasma cannon, don't use it. The game is only as balanced as you make it.
