Short and simply:
Why not take the white fog we know from pressing F and make it black as in dark? It should give a great atmosphere, even in caves.
I could imagine a server setting, slowly reducing and adding the max. possible viewing distance over time to mimic day/night. :smile.gif:
Of course, there's no way this will happen until dynamic lighting is done.
Why not? All he has to do is make every block look like it's under something for a timer and switch the skybox, then take it off for another one and change it back. Wouldn't be the prettiest, and the switch from day to night would be ridiculously jarring, but it's perfectly doable.

"Look! Grass underground! It's thar!"
"Don't be a smartass."
"More like smartgrass am I right?"
This could be done by just changing the brightness of the light source to make it darker, changing the fog to black, and changing the blue in the skybox to black (possibly with white dots for stars). You'd just be changing color values to make it look like night. The game world wouldn't realize though, so grass and such would stay. Assuming that Notch has it coded in a way he can easily do this it sounds reasonable.
yea this would pose problems with grass and plants, would be fun though. and this could be uber if/when he comes out with game modes like capture the flag or hunting people and animals, survival, etc. It would also make the MC world generally more realistic. But I think he should also make it so grass doesn't die so quickly. Someone else said 1 hour = 1 game day, which could work. 30 min light, 30 min dark, and it gradually gets darker/lighter so you can have times like: morning, noon, afternoon, dusk, nightfall, night, midnight.
I would be up for playing a CTF game in very dark environments if he made both time/night and game modes :biggrin.gif:
It would be cool for the hour thing. For a game mode, you spend 40 minutes (or a time limit you set) building and forming a fort. Then for a set time limit, it will be night and zombies will plague the level, and deteriorate your fort. You have to live all night.
I had always assumed that Night was planning to be implemented in the first place.
As for the plants, maybe you could have the moon shining onto the blocks...? I know the moon has nothing to do with photosynthesis, but you'd at least be able to see which blocks had shade and which blocks were out in the open.
