Story: I was exploring the tunnels around my base, and came across this GIANT underground chasm. Eventually I dug up and found that my house was practically right on top if it, although separated by a good 20 blocks of stone and dirt. I began digging skylights from the chasm to the surface so I had some better illumination, and it came to me: I couldn't effectively use dynamite in this situation, but I could use a block that digs downward.
Proposal: Thermite (Name is work in progress) is a block similar to TNT. Once triggered it remains active for 15 seconds and is affected by gravity (falls). It destroys any block it lands on at a rate of 1/second, so with optimal placement a thermite block will dig a hole twelve blocks deep.
Uses: Digging skylights for tunnels or for ladder holes. Could also be creatively used for traps and other machines that need a series of blocks destroyed.
Crafting: To be determined.
How about using for the crafting recipe (replace the gold ore with diamond ore). You do not get the buckets back, but when the Thermite runs out, 3 buckets of lava are dropped (as an item). Also, Thermite should kill entities like destroying other blocks.

Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
Thanks for the supportive posts! How would you want to craft such an item? I'm thinking a dynamite and another material like Lapis Lazuli (Gotta find SOME use for that stuff), so it mostly just costs the dynamite.
It shouldn't be too hard to craft. If it use something very rare I would prefer digging the 20 blocks by myself. the crafting recipes could be something like:
But I really like the idea. It would be awesome for digging ladder tunnels and making traps.
Hmm...well, thermite is really just aluminium shavings and rust IIRC. There are two problems in adding it to Minecraft, though. Firstly, aluminium was only able to be extracted in the late 1800s, and it was so hard to produce that until the end of the century it was actually more valuable than gold. The ability to produce aluminium affordably and in useful quantities is actually a very modern thing. Secondly, the temperature needed to ignite thermite is high...really high. You can't light it without a special ignition method.
On the other hand, there are other mixtures also classified as "thermite". You could maybe get away with an Iron and Redstone/Gunpowder combination recipe that produces a powder (which burns and destroys the block it's placed on) that can be further combined to make a block.

I like it!
This would be usful for digging Ladder Tunnels
