Before minecraft goes industrial or to fantasy, they have to improve what they have now. I think that minecraft still has a long way to go before anybody has to decide which way to go.
Once you think about it, Minecraft, if it was in a time period, is practically time travel just playing it. You start out as a caveman and end up in the industrial age. It's a fallacy to even say Minecraft has a set time period.
We can do plenty with redstone, we can travel with minecarts, we can build cities if we want. Cogs were taken out and replaced with redstone because cogs would transfer power. There is essentially no reason to add anything else 'industrial'.
I don't want minecraft to become too incredibly modernized. I also don't want guns, which most people would agree with me (This is one of the reasons I like minecraft, it's rare to find a popular video game without guns nowadays) I do agree that minecraft has some steampunk elements, but I don't feel centering around it does minecraft any justice.
I believe that minecraft should hold some small amount of basic technology (Like gears, steam engines and the like), steer away from all the modernized stuff. Also, I suppose the fantasy should keep developing, as it's too late to remove it.
Honestly, I must confess that I was deeply disapointed when Notch decided to add enchantments and potions. It gives the feeling that he had no damn idea where the hell he wanted the game to go. But as said before, it's too late to gripe about that I suppose.
Eh disagree with the guns. Crossbows would fit but we already have a bow. As for airplanes...it would probably be abused for griefer attacks on buildings.
