I've been thinking about Enchanting in Minecraft and while I find it fun, it really just does not seem to fit in Minecraft. I understand this is the direction that Notch wants to go in, but I just thought I would throw a thought I had for some of us to discuss.
In the beginning, Minecraft, to me, was about building and crafting using the materials of the Minecraft world. This is what made Minecraft unique and exceptional among the many other generic medieval, sci-fi, or fantasy games out there. An example would be Redstone, which, to me, is Minecraft's own unique take on magic in a interesting way. Putting experience and enchantments don't feel like it's the right path to take.
Anyways, I'm thinking that instead of enchantments, we could be able to craft certain items that we can combine with our tools, weapons, armor, and maybe even building materials to enhance them (similiar to enchantments). For example, instead of "Protection III" enchantment on armor, we could build plates that would be made with various materials to reinforce our armor. Instead of, "Bane of Arthropods", we could create an insecticide to coat the weapon in (Note I never said I wanted potions out. They still go with the idea of creating things with the environment).
Sooo..., that's all I have for now. I just wrote out everything almost right after I had this thought so it's not a very developed idea.
I agree that the enchantment system breaks tradition. I would like it if there was a way to do enchantment other than killing thousands of mobs. Like magical stones or something. Upgrades would bee cool as well, but in addition to enchantment.
Would be nice! however everything need to have his disadvantage so if we carry double armor we slow down about 10% of our normal speed :wink.gif: I would also like sticky boots by inserting leather boots or any other like this:
= slime ball...that is the name right? =boots of any material

I think magic stones could fit. I say this because I think of obsidian having apparent slight magical qualities since it's used to make portals.

Yeah, I agree with you about the disadvantages. I was thinking that you could only have about 2 attachments/ upgrades on any item an once along with the disadvantage each one could bring. Also, I'm curious as to what sticky boots would do. :ohmy.gif:

its like holding sneak all the time but walking at normal speed. however it makes you need to charge the jump by holding sneak and then pressing space however full charge gives you a two blocks high jump :laugh.gif:

That sounds awesome! That's the kind of thing I'm talking about! Instead of using bookcases to make glowing boots that magically make you walk faster, use slimeballs from naturally occurring Slimes to put onto the bottom of shoes to give unique effects.
OP, you are my new hero. (FYI I didn't have a hero before).
Here are some suggestions for attachment items:
-Iron Rod: crafted with 3 vertical iron ingots, gives 1 iron rod. Replacing the wooden handle of any tool with this rod will provide a MASSIVE durability boost.
-Clay Rod: like the iron rod, but made of clay bricks. Provides a much weaker bonus than iron rods, of course.
-Wooden Rod: crafted with 3 wood (logs from trees, not planks) and gives 3 wooden rods per craft. Provides a very weak durability increase.
-Golden Rod: doesn't increase durability, but it DOES increase loot dropped. Also increases the chance of getting flint from gravel.
-Flint: if you sharpen the edges of any tool with flint, the tool's damage/mining speed will be slightly increased.
-Obsidian: coating the outer edges of any tool with obsidian will significantly increased damage/mining speed.
-Magma Cream: if you smear the edges of a sword with this sticky/flammable substance, any mob you hit will be lit on fire.
-If you place gunpowder on the tip of a sword and then redstone dust on the sides, hitting any mob will knock them back. (The logic behind this is that hitting an enemy will cause the redstone dust to ignite the gunpowder, and since you just swung your sword it is facing the enemy and thus the explosion will propel them away).
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).

These are just examples to get people thinking.
Haha, cool! I've never been someone's hero before. XD
As for your ideas, I think their great! That's exactly the kind of thing we should be having. All sorts of different modifications and enhancements to our items. So we're actually CRAFTING our own tools and therefore making our own playstyles for ourselves. It's been said before but still, it's called MineCRAFT for a reason!
I hereby bump this thread in the name of great justice.
EDIT: I also think that there should be some "unique" type items that are not created by attaching stuff to an existing weapon but rather by crafting them from scratch. For example, maybe a "Scythe of the End" that is basically a hoe that lets you teleport in straight lines instead of at an arc like Ender Pearls. (I used a hoe as the base object because it seems creepier, and Endermen are all about creepiness so it fits).

Some interesting ideas here. I like the idea of using more crafting for improvements. Also, you might want to check out this thread for another approach to bridging the gap between enchanting and crafting. It should be right up your alley.

And you're very right, that idea is just the kind of thing I want put into the game!

Felt the same. I think attachments instead of enchantment is awesome. Bump so that everyone can see!

Optifine is awesome!
Now, when can Notch start using 3D instead of linear chunks for minecraft? It would massively improve performance, and increase height limits by hundreds of times. There are mods out there that do that already.
I really would like this instead of enchanting. bump! (plz dont flame me for reviving)
