Who wouldn't like to build a spiked corridor that you can crush your enemies in with sticky pistons, or a trench around your base with the bottom filled in with spike blocks to kill anyone who falls in. No more need to collect lava or dig to bedrock... :dry.gif:
not to mention all of the ways they could be used in farms (automated tree farm maybe?) and slaughterhouses.
Spike blocks would be a like a tool. They break after so many uses, therefore you may be ok using wooden spikes in a trench around your base walls, but not for a farm, or piston trap.
wooden spike block - dirt cheap, but not durable
iron spike block - cheap and durable
gold spike block - bank vault trap
obsidian spike block - bomb proof
diamond spike block - a defence worthy of minecraft gods
You can crush mobs with normal blocks. I have had a pretty good crusher working on my monster trap for a while. While it does lose some items, it does not lose any where near the items that the lava blade.
I would love for spikes to be added, except I don't want it to break, what a hassle. Say you keep dying on a spike part of an adventure map, and the spikes wear out, then the creator can't get onto the player's computer and put it back.
Yeh, I thought spikes were planned way back when pistons were added and then Mojang just sort of... forgot about them? It's not really a huge issue but would like to see spikes added eventually. It would do wonders for traps
Yeah, I'd like to seem the implemented.
If you've ever been on YouTube and found these ridiculously complex redstone traps, this would be a wonderful simplifier.
People have pointed out how lava, TNT, fall damage, piston crushing and other means would do the "Same thing" but those tend to take a lot of resources (TNT) or can be dangerous to set up (Lava). I want to see this in-game eventually.

"Trolling? of course not. I'm simply provoking an emotional response for my own amusement, by using the anonymity of the internet to exasperate other internet users into a controlled rage"
Yes, nice. Much more cleaner than tnt, and quicker than water or lava (less dangerous than lava as well.)
I think mobs should be impaled by these blocks and stay there, and get damage inflicted onto them gradually. They stick to it like cobwebs, when you get stuck, however, they slide down slightly faster, to balance it out.
A Clean And Easy Method. i Do Believe These Were Considered To Be Added. However, I Am A Bit Worried About Multiple Ranks Of Spike Blocks And Their Ability To Be Worn Down Till They Break. I Would Like To See Them In More Of The Essence Of Torches. They Could Be Moved By Blocks Like Pistons And Do Damage, But Without Any Support From A Nearby Block, They Break. With Multiple Copies Of Spikes And Being Able To Break Over A Period Of Time Could Seriously Stop A Lot of Traps In Servers Or Traps Used A Lot In A Short Period. A Lot Of Players Might Consider This A Good Protection, But Breaking Like Tools Would Ruin Their Chances Of Being Useful For The Players Who Want To Rely On A Defense A Bit More Permanent. Your Argument That They Could Solve Solutions Like Digging Deep Trenches Or Placing Lava, But With Your Suggested Breaking, It Wouldn't Work In The Long Term....
These spikes don't like spiky enough, or blocky enough. Spikes should be blocks :3 That way they can be pushed by pistons. And they should have durability. Otherwise they'll be overused.
If I want them spiky, I'd have to either make them 32x32, similar to how tripwires are 64x64. And if they are blocks, you mean they cannot be walked through? That would be like walking on top of a lava block D:... Or the spikes would have to have the hitboxes of a halfblock.
If they have durability, how much durability should it have? 20? Assuming spikes do at least double the damage of cacti[2 HP(1 heart)] and damage an entity at the same rate, then it would break after taking down, I don't know, like 2 heart damage to a player? Armor is most likely going to affect the damage of spikes, and diamond and iron armor is like the only armor that a player uses in SMP.
Lava does 2 1/2 hearts of damage including fire, which takes out half a heart a second, that means 2 3/4 hearts of damage per second while in lava, and 1/2 heart per second for a while even after getting out of the lava.
Pretend spikes did 4 hearts of damage per second(too OP), it would then get reduced to around 2 hearts with someone using iron armor. Probably to 1 - 1 1/2 heart(s) with someone using diamond armor. Then bring out protection enchantment. Spikes will literally do nothing, similar to lava.
And players constantly generate 1/2 HP when they have full hunger, which is easy to maintain.
And also, if spike blocks cannot be walked through, then it would make mob traps too easy :X getting hurt while being pushed by water for the right amount of time.
I also think spike blocks should destroy items like a cactus.
