Right now, the original textures of Minecraft are 16x16 textures. What if in the options, you could change to textures from low-ultra. As you raise the option from low to ultra, the original textures go from 16x16(low) to improved 256x256(ultra) textures. This could also be implemented into texture packs so you wouldn't have to download one version of it, and stick to it. Let's take a 64x64 texture pack for an example. I'm starting to lag a little bit, so I got into the options and lower the texture quality. Let's say that I have it on medium at first and I change it to low. The textures then go from 64x64 to 32x32. Would this be helpful?

I agree, but all that is is downloading all resolutions of a type of texture pack and a mod that lets you change texture packs ingame. But this should be in vanilla.
