Admit it, there was a time when you were in a vast ocean in your silly little boat and you wished "damn, I want a ship to travel the seas! To fire tnt at creepers and raid dungeons and NPC villages!" but let's face it, no one is going to take a pirate in a rowboat seriously.
Or maybe you're the less impulsive type and prefer to simply live in a houseboat, free from the dangers of many mobs and being able to move whenever necessary.
Perhaps you have masses of goods to move between your minecraft towns, or maybe, on multiplayer you'd like to have a crew and ship instead of a bunch of people in little boats awkwardly bumping into one another as they try to reach the other side of the ocean.
Fear not! For I have a.. SUGGESTION!
SHIPS!
Ships would be able to be made as large as a body of water would allow, so long as they only connect to the "frame" of the ship. The frame of the ship would be crafted and then placed into a deep and large enough body of water. Once placed, the ship can easily be moved by right clicking on it (much in the same way as clicking on a normal boat) and then steered where you please. But who wants to ride around in just a frame? No worries! Just add blocks to the frame to make any ship you desire. Add decks, sails, cabins, etc that move with you wherever you go!
Be careful though.
1) Too big! A boat that is too big will have difficulty moving around and will likely hit a sandbar (during which you must go under the ship and destroy the sand).
2) No stone ships! Sorry, but have you ever seen a floating stone ship? No, because they sink. You can have stone on your ship, but if it makes up more than 25 percent of the ships blocks, then it will sink and once a ship has sunk it can't really be "unsunk". The ship can also sink if you blow a hole in it.
And there you go folks! I hope you enjoyed my suggestion!
Though it HAS been mentioned before and mods do exist for this, I am not just going to say that.
I have long wanted ships that you can do things on. (Perhaps even hire a NPC crew that could navigate for you) While having custom ships would be really nice, I cannot imagine ease of use. Notch would have to make many blocks, for a shipyard. How else would you specify the limits of the boat? The boat would be built on the shipyard blocks, and then it would have to be launched. With today's physics for boats, this is not feasible. Whenever you try to move in a boat, even at low speeds, turning and accelerating is quite slow/laggy/glitchy and it must be rewritten. If the control of a standard small boat could be fixed than I will personally mine 20 diamonds for you, and make you a cake.

@Draewa, please stop. Saying "There is a mod for that." can get you a warning from a moderator.
