I have no idea if this has been suggested before and if it has then let this thread die
I propose a change to the current repair system making it cheaper in the long run
Let say for example you're mining (current system) and you are near lava and you have 2 half broken diamond picks so you combine them then fall in lava and lose all your items. Well you just wasted 6
My change to the system only cost 2 coal some time crafting and 1 :biggrin.gif: (material varies upon item type iron, gold, diamond only)
Now you are mining with the current system you have a little shelter a furnace crafting table and a diamond but then your diamond pick breaks instead of losing it you get back 18 diamond shards so you go back to base then place 9 diamond shards in the crafting table then you get a cracked diamond after that you put it in your and lose 1 or charcoal in the process but then you have a diamond now you make your other diamond take the one you had in your inventory and you get a pick back with the cost of one
Nice idea. However, it takes more time, and can be confusing (for some people, I understand it). The current way is fast and easy, but uses more resources. This one is lengthier, and you can't do it whilst exploring, but saves you more resources. I say we keep both ways.

Good idea
And how about this with an enchanted tool when it breaks it has a chance to give you 2 instead of the shards but they would be enchanted diamonds and you would need 3 for a pick

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.

So then that could also work for gold tools and iron tools. Stone and wood are too common for that method in my opinion.
Gold pick breaks - 9-27 gold nuggets return*
Iron pick breaks - 9-27 iron shards return*
Diamond pick breaks - 9-27 diamond fragments return*
9 pieces of an ore to create one cracked jewel/ore block which is then smelted back into its original form
use this to make a new tool :biggrin.gif:
* because if you always got 27 back then you would have infinite picks - 27 = 3 ore/jewel
