Steel is often suggested, but all of the ones I've seen allow the player to make it themselves. This suggestion hinges on the idea that Steve has neither the tools or the expertise to create steel.
Creating steel would happen like this. Once you've found an NPC village with a smith, you can right click on the smith NPC. When you do, a box similar to the inventory screen would open up. It would have two slots for iron ore, four slots for coal/charcoal and one slot for payment: a gold nugget. Once you've placed all the required items, the smith will toss a steel ingot at you after a couple seconds. Steel would be in between iron and diamond in durability and mining speed, and damage.

But he as the experience and tools to be able to work with diamond and fashion it into usable armor and weapons? Never mind that nothing short of diamond itself could be used to do anything with diamond.
Invalid argument.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Working with gems and working with metals are totally different things. Plus, I believe the smith has a lava forge, and Steve just has a plain old furnace.

So why can't steve make a lava forge? The practicalaty of working with gems to make armor and tools is just laughable. Forging metals is far FAR easier.

Oh, Im all for more items, be it NPC crafting, or whatever. I personally would love more items like Terraria, but not as crazy. IE 1 or 2 more tiers of tools and perhaps some different weapon types, like war axes.

Whoops, didn't check. Fixed.

Okay, but what do you think of the idea itself?
