Many people don't use compasses, instead sticking with F3. Obviously compasses need to be made a little more useful.
What if compasses not only showed you the direction to your original spawn point, but also pointed to your bed? Rather than actually having the needle point to your bed your view could just have a transparent bed icon displayed on the screen in the direction of your bed that you'd only see when holding a compass in your hand.
So for example if you're standing on top of a tower above your spawn point and look down, you'd see a little bed icon superimposed on the floor.
The in game justification for this would be that when Steve has a compass he can keep track of which direction his home is at, and you the player get to benefit from his excellent sense of direction.
I really like the idea of compasses pointing to the last bed you slept in, rather than your original spawn point all the time. The compass does not help me find my closest hidey hole if it is in a different direction than my original spawn.
And yes I know I can just press F3, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a compass.
If I recall correctly at one time the compass did point back to the bed last slept in some time ago and that ability seems to of been lost in all the following updates. Hope that does get fixed somehow I rarely ever build home right where I spawn.
Just have the compass reset itself to the bed you last slept in. Easy solution.
This.
Or even better have 2 needles (maybe with 2 colors), one would point towards your spawn and the other needle would point towards your latest bed ('cause beds are red :biggrin.gif: like redstone [of course I know it means nothing :biggrin.gif:]).

Unless you use magic (which is possible now) there's no way a needle should be able to point to your bed. It's just wood and wool, nothing to attract a needle. So that's why I suggest a bed icon instead. It's not part of the tool. The icon just represents Steve keeping track of where his bed is for you.
Besides, I like being able to keep track of where the original spawn is.

The Sun rises in the North! Now these points of data make a beautiful line...

Except that doesn't make sense. Beds aren't magnetic.
Of course this is redstone, which is magical, so anything is possible. But I still think it stretches logic a little too much.
Besides, it's useful to know which way is your original spawn.
