PERFECT IDEA! When you use it on an anvil, you make STEEL! Witch is better than iron, twice the durability, and 1.5 more of the speed.
Going with this:
Crafting tools the basic way (I.E. Right now), would produce the same old item
Crafting tools with an anvil would produce a higher "grade" of the item.
This could mean higher durability, faster collection, and a new, cooler image.
It just seems like a waste of time. I mean, now you pop the iron ores into the furnace and you can do whatever you want when they're cooking.
But with this, this you have to go back to there when they're done and then wait for them to be hammered out. Then you have to cook it again. It's just a huge waste of precious time I could be using to fight mobs with my new iron armor and iron sword.
Edit for those suggesting steel: Why do we need more metals and more armor and more tools? Isn't the 5 we have now enough for you? Are the tools and armor in the game really that weak in your opinion?
Neo ever since I started seeing your posts on the forums I knew we would have much different opinions on things, and yes, iron is far to weak, because it's one extreme to another, iron can brake only 251 blocks for a single tool, and diamond can break 1552, or around those numbers, anyways, the point of it is that theres no medium inbetween the two materials, so steel would be the happy medium.
You should be able to weaponize the anvils by dropping them on the heads of your foes.
Is there a piano topic somewhere so I can say the same there? Really what we need is an acme mod that allows us to do all the silliness the Looney Toons manage. :3

I personally feel that there needs to be more ores and toolsets in the game.
I think it would be cool if an anvil was simply another skin for a crafting box (okay with another crafting recipe, too of course). I would like it for the diversity of looks, I don't think we need something besides the origninal crafting bench regarding functionality.
Anvils are made out of iron. With this system you would need an anvil to make iron. But it takes iron to make an anvil. See also; Catch 22
Besides, you don't need to shape metal to make ingots. Ingots are cast...as in the metal heated to a molten state, poured into a shaped mold, and then cooled into solid bars.

But making steel on the anvil is a great idea. That way we can have a new metal without a new ore.
