Minecraft is shaping up to have a decent amount of content that could be used for PVP; between potions, sprinting/crits, the new Bow mechanics and Sword blocking, there's a lot of ways to kill your fellow Miner! But without a bending of the rules, it's difficult to organize a proper fight.
As such, I'd like to suggest a single, multi-faceted block to elegantly enable PVP on any scale. If you like it, please note your response in the poll above. Here's how the Headquarters Block works;
1. Right-clicking the HQ block brings up a confirmation menu; "Fight for this faction? Y/N". Selecting "Yes" changes your name's color (and something in your GUI, I'd suppose) to your Faction's color. While allied to a Faction, you can only attack and be attacked by members of a different Faction.
If you die while allied to a Faction/bound to an HQ block, you respawn at the HQ block and get a confirmation dialog to either re-join the fight or quit and become Neutral again. Dying while bound to an HQ block doesn't affect your score.
2. The HQ block has its Faction aligned to the color of a Wool block adjacent to it. This allows players to capture enemy HQ's by removing/replacing the wool blocks.
3. The HQ block has a Score counter, which is set to a number when it is first placed. This number is added to the numbers of all other HQ blocks of the same Faction; for example, if you have one HQ with 30 Score, and two blocks with 15 Score, all three would register your Faction as having 60 Score.
Every time a player respawns using the HQ Block, that block's Score goes down by 1; if that block's Score is 0, it removes 1 point from another HQ block your Faction owns. Losing an HQ block (by removing its wool block) removes its Score from that Faction's Score, and capturing it by placing a new Wool block adds its Score to your Faction's Score.
When a Faction's Score reaches 0, all HQ blocks tied to that Faction go "dark" and all players tied to it become Neutral.
I hope this suggestion is clear and basic enough; hopefully, this is intuitive enough to fit into Vanilla. This system would work for any type of PVP, from vast territory-control battles to Arena tournaments. Again, if you like this suggestion, mark the poll above, and leave a reply!
This should be a plugin.
Not every server is PVP, and not every PVP likes to even keep score; some just like to fight for other's items.
Adding "Options" doesn't work, there seem to be a bit too many options. If every menu option was added, the menu would be larger then the full screen.
Crafting doesn't work, it'd be a pointless block in SSP.

There's no "Options" except the Score, which is set one time after you place the block. Using wool blocks placed next to the HQ for faction/capture doesn't require a menu, either.
