Here's an idea to add fans to the game (as in the bladed device that creates wind, not someone who likes something).
Fans would function a bit like pistons, doing nothing when off and remaining on for as long as they receive a redstone charge.
They would have a front side, and a back side. When on they would attract entities (players/mobs, loose items, boats/minecarts but not blocks) to their back side and would repel them from their front side. This wind power would have a maximum range of 5 blocks, but would rapidly get weaker as you move away.
This means that an item on the floor or a mob near the back of a fan will get drawn towards it. And something near the front will get pushed away. This force would not affect placed objects like blocks, torches, pressure plates, etc. just entities. So you could this in places where a piston might damage something if extended, for example if you wanted to push items off a pressure plate.
Upward facing fans would allow entities to defy gravity. Players/mobs/items can get sucked off the ground and cling to the bottom of a fan ceiling. You could fly around below a fan ceiling with nothing beneath you. Or if above the fans, you'd hover about a block in the air and could float above a fan floor where you want.
Downward facing fans would act like increased gravity, either pushing players/mobs/items down or sucking them down. It would be impossible to jump when wind is pushing you down.
Simple diagrams:
Pulled towards [Horizontal Fan ->] Pushed away
Pushed up (floating in midair one block above fan) [Upward Fan ^] Sucked up (floating pressed against the fan)
Sucked down (can't jump) [Downward Fan v] Pushed down (can't jump)
Hover boats! The transportation of the future!
This is an interesting idea for many uses.
Yes, it could lift up boats. Although you might not be able to move the boat around quickly, since you'd have nothing to paddle off of. Instead you could combine upward fans and horizontal fans to lift boats up and blow them (and their passengers) sideways wherever you want them to go. It would also work with minecarts.
Or you could just blow people around without them being in a vehicle.

This is a really cool idea, actually. If a player or a mob were to get sucked into a fan, would they die or take damage? I think it would be cool if one could make mob shredders that suck them in and blow out whatever item they drop on the other side.

There would be a grille preventing them from getting sucked in. So it wouldn't damage anyone directly, just move them.
You could move mobs into some kind of deadly mob trap though, so it would definitely help out in autoharvesters.
Glass + Fans = Traveling in Tubes!
Edit:Fans on bottom then have some fans above you spread out activated with redstone at timed intervals like how magnetic trains work.

A simple mechanic that can be used in a plethora of creative ways. I seriously think somebody should try modding this in the game to see if it would work well or not.

Wind from fans can overlap. So you could make a zigzagging path that pushes someone from fan to fan to fan, to blow them where they need to go.
It wouldn't be faster than walking though (since that would compete with Minecarts) it'd just be a cool way of automating travel.
