So it looks like books and bookshelves will be coming into a lot more prominence soon with the advent of the enchanting table and possibly write-able books. So here's the thing... Why not make a bookshelf block similar to a cake block? Right-clicking changes the skin incrementally until there's no more left.
In this case, every right-click would give you a book, and the topmost full shelf would change to look as though it were empty. Right-clicking a bookshelf that has empty shelves with a book in-hand would place it on the shelf, and the lowest empty shelf would fill again.
Not only would this be a neat way to store and retrieve the many books players will probably be writing (I can only imagine all of the captain's logs and copies of 'The Lusty Argonian Maid' that will spawn from this feature), but if the ability to enchant books to make spellbooks is implemented (as seen here - http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/711838-enchant-books-for-magic-spells/ - and I really hope it is because that's awesome), then refillable bookshelves could serve double duty as an epic wizard library.
And speaking of the enchanting table, you know how it pulls knowledge from nearby bookshelves to increase it's power? I was thinking this bonus could decrease depending on how many books are removed (down to 0 benefit if you take out all 3), and increase further if you store spellbooks in them.
I think that would be nifty if he added a bigger inventory, so you can hold tons of books like what you are suggesting, and spells in books and what not.

Here's where you lost me. The "writing in books" idea is only possible, not definite.
You can't write in books yet, and if you ever are able to, it will probably be in a far later update.
Hold 'yer horses boi. Suggesting something that requires another thing to be put in (as in, suggesting Happy Face Block that requires Smily items to be implemented, and that requiring a happy mob implemented) takes up valuable time. I couldn't express in words how annoyed I am when a user does something like this. I, personally, would like to see one suggestion in a thread that doesn't require anything else to be put in to be made.

Well it wouldn't open up an inventory screen or anything like that - it would work more like taking a slice of cake

Oh wow, for some reason I thought that was a confirmed feature for the full release...
Well, This would probably still be a useful idea eventually...
And this doesn't really REQUIRE anything else... it's fairly standalone (the base idea of removing and adding books from a bookshelf block requires no new items or gameplay). I was just also stating a few ways that this base suggestion could interact with other planned or suggested features

Yes, the basic idea doesn't. But spellbooks haven't even been planned; they are not in the wiki.
Thus, the only basic overall use for this suggestion is chests used for storing books. Which almost makes no sense (you require books to craft them)
Maybe switching textures is good for aesthetics, but only in making your home look nice. And this just makes griefers about 5 times as annoying, having to cycle back to your original texture after them messing with your library. Even if it's only used in a downloadable adventure map, it's still kind of pointless.

At first I assumed this meant that after a span of time your bookshelves would disappear because the enchant table 'depletes' them of knowledge. One time I had a waste disposal next to my enchant bookshelves and when I came back from mining half of them were gone and this is what I thought happened..
(the underground lava flow I made caught them on fire even though it was through a couple of blocks)

Lol nice, same happened to me with a bit of fencing near my incinerator.
But more on topic, no, I meant that you could take books out of them like an actual bookshelf
Useless (for now) for anything other than aesthetics perhaps, but it'd still make bigass libraries that much more epic :3
