Concept:
I would like to see a crafting option added to the game that keeps track of items created by the player and allows the player to quickly recreate an item by looking through a list of available recipes.
Implementation:
First the player crafts a Journal by combining a Book, Ink Sac and Feather (the exact layout is not important to this post). Journals can be used to store and access crafting recipes. When a player has a Journal equipped in hand and uses a Workbench, it adds a side window to the crafting screen showing all recipes that a player has learned while using the Journal. Recipes you have ingredients for are listed in bold font followed by a number indicating how many you may make based on current inventory. Recipes missing ingredients would be grayed out. Additional functions could be built-in, but that's the baseline idea.
Bonus Options:
While not necessary to make this suggestion work, I have a few extra options that I think fall within the same concept and would improve the idea.
1) The Journal is also usable decoration in the game. The player can place the Journal in the world and when used, allows the player to write whatever they want on the page much like signs. This is not mandatory, but just a fun (in my opinion) side use for Journals.
2) When using Journal to access crafting record, the Workbench should access all ingredients from all Chests within a small area (such as 3 squares from the Workbench). I think this would help make crafting a little faster and fun without doing any "harm" to the MineCraft experience.
3) If a character places a Journal next to a Workbench, they automatically get the affect of using the Journal whenever using the Workbench. This doesn't change how the Journal operates, but means the player doesn't have to carry around the Journal everywhere with them.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I curious if anyone has any suggestions for the... suggestion :smile.gif:
Also, I noticed one person voted against the idea and I would honestly like to know why. I don't mind if people disagree with me - in fact, a friendly debate is fun.
I "like the idea in general" and therefore gave it a like and vote. The only problem I have with your idea is that it produces no way for players to be able to find schematics without discovering them on their own. As much as its a "cool" idea what with discovering things on your own, its way too much to ask of the player, which is why I like the thread in my signature much more. One of the things that you mention is allowing the workbench to access chests nearby, and allowing schematics to be viewed while at the workbench which is ingenius.
Seriously, there needs to viewable crafting recipes in the game. Go support this idea. Also click on my profile to view my space thread under find content.
First, I just wanted to say, I've sat on this thread for a long time to see if something got implement. Obviously it hasn't and I feel it's still applicable. So instead of creating a new thread, I'll just revive this one.
Anyway, the primary reason I bring up this suggestion again is because I think with the alchemy system I think it would be even more helpful. I never can remember the alchemy recipes - maybe I'm just dumb, but it seems really complicated. So I always have to pull up the wiki. So basically, I want it to work just like the original idea, but with added support for alchemy.
Additionally, I wanted to respond (belatedly) to 1Haus1 because he made a valid critique:

First of all, nothing I wrote precludes the option of adding schematics to the game that could work with the recipe book system. I think that's great idea, but not core to the journal concept. If schematics, recipes, etc get added to the game, I'd certainly like for the recipe book to support them.
Second, the system I proposed does not change the basic gameplay of MC. Players still have to find the recipes on their own or look in wikis. Though personally I don't think the current trial and error method for discovering recipes is fun (I admit I just use the wiki), there are some people that think that it's important. I wanted my suggestion to be as straight forward and non-controversial as possible in order to make it for vanilla MC.
