It'd be cool to be able to paint blocks different colors, with a custom pallet of colors. You could even use existing dyes, though for a full pallet more dyes or combinations would be needed. Once mixed with water you could carry the paint in buckets. Then you could paint your buildings etc.
That's all that I could wish for since I'm sure my true dream (a mob, with the arms and legs of a gorilla, the torso of a giraffe, and the head of a gerbil, a grey gerbil, named Bu-Bubba-Dink, that dropped delicious sweets when fed gravel) will most likely never happen.
Wow you have some crazy dreams. If you want to paint your house then just go two or three pages back on the news page and find the "paint brush" mod. It lets you make brushes and then paint with them. You can make some really cool stuff or just paint your house. Its up to you.
This seems like a good idea. Although that would mean no-one would bother looking for the more exotic materials to give their house a different colour.
e.g Why would someone bother to go and mine Lapis Lazuli to create a blue block when you can just paint dirt?
I don't follow your line of thought. I'm not going to speak to the OP's idea for him, but I would assume you still need to collect the Lapis Lazuli if you want to make blue paint. My thoughts on the matter would be that it uses the same recipes as dying wool. Combine the ingredients with a bucket of water and <poof> paint.
Personally, I support this idea in the actual game.

I have a lot of gravel.
but it'd be nice if it got implimented into the game itself

I'd paint may barn red without having to use wool. With the wood texture it'd look great!
