In short, what needs to be fixed is SMP client lag.
As in, breaking/placing blocks and chat. I'm not any tech guy, but I think it involves pings. And this is annoying, as 'lag-free' servers have this problem.
So what do you guys think?

the ping depends on the server's RAM and upload speed mainly (also download speed but not so much) so if you have a small upload speed (like i do) and try host 20 people on it then its gonna lag heaps
I agree that server lag is sometimes a problem. Not to mention the plain buggy nature of it. I also hate the lighting issues (client or server side) that have been around for as long as I've been playing. Dark patches under overhangs that are pitch black when they should at least be recieving some light from the sun. They eventually update after a night cycles or a torch is placed, but still shouldn't even be happening that way. Unless this is just a bug on my computer anyway. I hate finding what appears to be a cave opening only to find out it was just a lighting glitch when I smack my face into a wall one space into the darkness.
Well there's nothing we can do. You either get a better internet connection, join a server that is hosted close to where you are or get a better computer.

Not everyone can afford better internet/laptop, and some want to play on good servers.
This is something Notch should try to find a PROPER workaround to.
And notice the ping didn't matter much before 1.5?

Ping always matters. No matter what. No exceptions. Period.
All servers are laggy unless they have sufficient resources. I host a server with 3 gigabytes of RAM allocated, a 2.90 GHz processor, and 65 MBps upload speed.
On this server, I can host 20 people with minimal lag.
Stop trying to host servers on systems that aren't capable of it.
