DO NOT BE AFRAID! THE GIANT WALL OF TEXT WILL NOT HURT YOU!
I was reading the MInecraft wiki, and then i randomly clicked on the page for ice. What i found astonished me. In 1.9, ice will become harvestable, with the Silk Touch enchantment. What is more, that ice will be able to be taken into the Nether and melted to provide water! Unfortunately, the section I found this information in was the bugs section! I think this should not be considered a bug, because we NEED water in the Nether!
Having water opens up a ton of possibilities for making the Nether habitable. The most obvious reason it will make the Nether habitable is that crops can grow easily, because they would have water and farmland blocks could become fertile. Also, reeds could be planted in the Nether. Another great use is making obsidian farms to harvest the massive amounts of lava found in the Nether. But the ultimate reason for having water in the Nether-the one that would be of the most use- is for a cobblestone generator. Dont see the uses? Well let me tell you. A cobble generator would make it so that you could make stone tools, with trees that you can grow in the Nether. Also, cobble could be smelted into stone, which would allow you to make Stone Bricks, a great building material that would look really good in the Nether.
But why would you want to live in the Nether? Well with the 1.9 update coming, almost all of the potion ingredients will come from the Nether. And it would be really annoying to have to go back and forth from the Nether to the overworld. Also, Nether Wart, the basis for almost all potions, can only be grown in the Nether. Another reason to make the Nether habitable is so you can banish your enemies(or freinds) there. They would have to live out the rest of their lives there, their only companions mindless zombie pigmen.
"But with water it would be too easy to survive! The Nether is supposed to be a challenge!" Not so! May I point out that to obtain ice blocks in the first place, the player would first have to imbue an item with the Silk Touch enchantment, when there is no way of knowing which enchantment you will get from an enchanting table? And, furthermore, that the enchanting table costs two diamonds and three obsidian, which would mean you would have to get 5 diamonds before even thinking of getting ice?(5 because 2 for the enchanting table and 3 for the diamond pickaxe needed to mine obsidian)
So making the Nether habitable would be an endgame acheivement, one that you would have to work hard for and that could only be done by spending a ton of time mining diamonds, tediously farming XP and then hoping for the Silk Touch enchantment.
Thank you for reading my wall of text, and i hope we can convince Notch to keep this godsend. This would make the Nether completely habitable, which will be a neccesity in the upcoming 1.9 update.
I agree with you I want a cobble generator in my minecraft neather are then i dont have to just stick with wood tools there beuse i want the area to not have me bring anything there besides building materails but a cobble gerneartor ill save trips back and forth.
i agree and i also want to make the lava to water and the netherrack to be grass so the nether can be a paradise
Hmmm...somehow i doubt that will happen unless water running over Netherrack turns it into grass in the Nether. But i was just saying he should not make extra effort to fix something that is supplementary to the minecraft experience, and makes the game have one more building aspect, in making a great effort to be able to live in the Nether.
Excellent idea. When you think about it, it really is an endgame focus that can be put to great use on SMP. It requires a lot of effort to achieve, of course, but would make the Nether all the better.
Possibly, if water got too close to a lava ocean (got within, for example, 2 meters of 4 or more lava blocks), it would just evaporate. This way you couldn't just create walk on an obsidian pathway across the lava oceans of the nether avoiding many of the dangers that should not so easily be avoided, but you'd still be able to create an obsidian generator and live.
On the other hand, it might still be overpowered and might have to be balanced further.
