They're all either partly or completely made up of 2 dimensional images. I think this is ugly, and that these things should have depth to them. Similarly to how Notch gave the chest a more advanced model, he should do that to a lot of other in-game objects as well.
Doors and Hatches should have insides to their window panes.
Doors should have handles.
Beds and Cauldrons should have 3 dimensional feet.
Rails, Ladders, Iron Bars, Glass Panes, Flowers, Mushrooms, and Vines should all have depth. They wouldn't require a complicated texture map, the texture could just be stretched out, like how the object appears when held in your hand.
Items thrown on the ground should not always rotate to face you, they should have sides to them.
I made a few models of my idea. The current model is on the left, the model I made is on the right. I made these models myself with Techne.

I can't really see much of a difference on the bed models.

If you look closely, the feet have insides to them.
Yea, I just noticed it. And what about adding depth to item drops as well? For example, if I drop a sword right now it is a 2d picture instead of a 3rd model.

I dunno, personally I rather like the simple charm it has now.
Also as a texture maker I die a little inside thinking about having to texture even more complicated models. Plus, having flat textures for those things in terrain.png rather than extra models gives more room to customize.
Yeah, I understand your point. But for simple things like flowers, mushrooms, vines, ladders, rails, and iron bars, the texture could just be stretched along the edges, similarly to how it appears when held in your hand.
Although this is a nice idea I have a feeling it could ruin current texture packs, I like sleeping on a sacrificial block, which would be impossible to make if there were models, sorry , but no support.

Well it could use the same way the sides of the trapdoor is textured, as there isn's real slot for it in the terrain.png file.
Exactly. For the insides of the feet it could just use the exact same texture as the outsides of the legs use. They'd have to write specific model rendering code for this, but it wouldn't be a problem at all for texture packers.
Note: This would be OPTIONAL
Doors. Cauldrons. Hatches. Beds. Flowers. Vines. Mushrooms. Ladders. Rails. Iron Bars. Glass Panes. Thrown items.
What do all of the above have in common?

Super improvements! Rails look nice..
Is this really such a bad idea?

Always open to critique and suggestions. (:
I used Techne. You can get it here: Techne!
