The hostile mobs seem to be completely random enemy types taken from various RPGs. Admittedly, the Creeper and then Endermen are unique, but the others seem to have been thrown in at the start for testing, and then left in. And I, being ever so slightly obsessive compulsive, don't like this.
What do a skeleton, spider, zombie, exploding pillar and black teleporting demon creature have in common? Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but its a serious question. :| They don't have anything in common!! So my suggestion is for the mobs of the game to be revamped. Don't freak out when you read that, though; most of the mobs will remain ingame without much functionality change, but the mobs will then have a common theme to them.
Proposed changes to the hostiles
With the ender realm coming soon, it looks like we're going to have a new main enemy; the creatures of the ender. The ender dragon, and the ender men. And I think that this is the perfect opportunity to fiddle around with the mobs we have. It looks like the ender mobs are the antagonists to our heroic Steve. I think that we should change all the hostile mobs so that they appear to be invaders from the ender realm!
Zombie -> Ender Warrior
This guy behaves similarly to the zombie currently. He runs at the player, and attempts to attack with melee. But the Ender Warrior has a sword instead of his decaying hands. This means that he no longer drops rotten flesh.
Skeleton -> Ender Archer
Again, this one behaves similarly to the skeleton currently. It's an enderman, with a bow. So really, it's another skin change. Also, this means he no longer drops bones.
Enderman -> Ender Mage
This is the most powerful ender enemy, and he's the one we've already seen. I propose a number of additions to his abilities; as one of those higher on the ender heirarchy, he is one of the leaders. He can slightly boost the stats of the ender creatures around him.
Creeper
The creeper gets a reskin, and a background story. He is now part of the endermen army. Think of how the orcs from Lord of the Rings use trolls; the Creeper is the creature that the endermen use in sieges. He's a bit stupid (it's not depression that makes him blow himself anyway), and happy to take orders. He now has the same creepy dark + purple skin :ohmy.gif:
Spider
The spider remains the same as he always has been. Although, if he becomes part of a spider + jockey team, he goes slightly darker, and gets the creepy purple eyes that the endermen flaunt. Sort of like being possessed. The cave spider is the baby version of this creature?
Slime + Magma Cube
Part of another 'species' of enemies, the magma cube is simply the nether version of the slime. They'll stay as is.
Blaze + Ghast
They are the creatures of the nether. The theme there is fire and death, and these guys fit in pretty well. No proposed changes.
Silverfish
These guys are kinda wierd, but I say we just keep them as the are for now.
Proposed changes to the friendly mobs
Not too many changes need to be made here; most of the friendly mobs are perfect.
Chicken + Cow + Sheep
For a simple reskin, these need to spawn with varying genders. Just add a variable 'gender' with value 0 or 1 (1 is male). Then draw a slightly different skin for each. So, there'd be a rooster skin, a bull skin, and a ram skin. Males could potentially have more health? And ideally, males would be a bit aggressive, too. And you can't get eggs from a rooster, or milk from a bull. That'd be awkward..
Pig + Squid
Its tricky to see the gender of these guys (or girls, I'm not sure which...). So, they don't really need gender specific skins.
Wolf
Do wolves reproduce? I don't think they should; just find them out in the while, give them some snacks, and you're all good!
Zombie Pigman
Don't like the zombie pigman. Completely random. This guy gets removed, unfortunately, as he fills no extra purpose and isn't unique.
Villagers
The villagers can fill the slight void created when we removed zombie pigmen by becoming aggressive and taking out knives if you attack them. I'm sure the Mojang team have other plans for the TESTIFICATES.
Other possible changes
If the zombies don't drop rotten flesh anymore, then perhaps meat, if left raw for too long, rots?
The problem of no bones is easily solved: fossils between layers 48-64 (and potentially more common under dirt under water?
The blaze guys drop Blaze Rods. I propose another ore - Blaze Ore - for the nether. When you mine it, it drops a blaze ingot (no smelting necessary). The blaze ingot can make a blaze rod in the same way wood makes sticks. Possibly other uses can be found for the ingots or the rods.
That's all folks!
So, what do you think? Any suggestions for other drops or possible changes? Anything I've missed? Thanks!!
just because we have endermen now doesnt mean everything has to be ender _______ :sad.gif: i like that the mobs are all different, because everything being the same theme would be boring. it also gives an implied backstory of you being the last human in minecraft.
they already are related, zombies and skelies are undead, and like you said, RPG mobs ("mob" is also an RPG term, as in mobile unit).
the RPG relation links them to spider, another "dungeon" type enemy (it's probably worth mentioning notch is a big fan of "dungeon crawl" games). spiders are also commonly found in caves IRL, and it just so happens caves are ****ing everywhere in minecraft, so that fits too.
it might also be a bit strange to find a bunch of warriors and archers underground in a sealed cave with no portal... at least most of the mobs are dead, implying a cave in of some sorts can be the cause.
creepers are supposed to be a sentient plant type thing that spreads it's seeds via explosion,(which makes sense in a world where there aren't many animals to eat/poop out it's seeds) and last time i checked, there seems to be quite a lot of plants in minecraft, so it's only the luck of the cards that a creeper could evolve, i mean, we have exploding trees in the congo (look it up) so why not exploding cucumbers?.
endermen aren't supposed to be a main antagonist anyways, notch just wanted to make a "creepy" mob to achieve shits with a possibility of giggles.
and zombie pigmen? dude, they're in hell, why would hell have to make sense?
wait...
why the hell does any of this have to make sense? it's notches game, first of all, so he could turn this **** MLP in 1.9 and we'd have to deal with it, so why do you get a say in what is or isn't "right"?
