I have come here today to suggest the addition of an alluvial deposit to the river biome to make it more worthwhile. But some of you are probably asking, "What is an alluvial deposit and how can it make rivers better?", hopefully this explanation will enlighten you.
Alluvial Deposit: Clay, silt, or gravel carried by rushing streams and deposited where the stream slows down.
Now that you know what they are, let's talk about how they will improve the river biome.
Alluvium: A general term for any unconsolidated soil, but for our purposes, let's assume that this is a unique block that is different from dirt, sand, and gravel. Alluvial Deposits are made from these blocks. Alluvium will not be obtainable by legitimate means.
Properties: Alluvium would fall like gravel and sand, but wouldn't be an obtainable block by normal means. Alluvium will drop various things when harvested from meager bones to gold nuggets. Alluvium will drop 1-2 items. Alluvium can be harvested with a shovel.
Location and Frequency: Alluvium will be found in all rivers, no matter how small. It will be a very commonplace block. Alluvium will be found near the edges of rivers and deposits will comprise of 10 or more blocks.
This is how alluvium should appear in rivers.
Let's pretend that the gravel in this shot is alluvium.
Drops: As stated in properties, alluvium will drop various things upon harvesting, but let's look into these drops in depth.
Reasoning Behind Drops:
Dirt,Sand, and Clay: All of these blocks are found commonly in rivers and will make up the bulk of alluvium.
Bone: Animals die, let's face that, and when animals die in water, their remains are covered by sediment. Thus bones are able to be found in alluvium.
Flint: Gravel does provide flint, but it should also be found in alluvium. This would provide another place to find flint and would be closer to the surface.
Gold Nugget: Ever heard of the California Gold Rush? I'm pretty sure you have. Gold can be washed into alluvial deposits by erosion. It would provide an easier way to obtain gold nuggets for crafting and alchemy, but it will be far less efficient than going to the Nether and killing a Zombie Pigman.
Lapis Lazuli: Similar to Gold Nuggets in the explanation of its presence. Gems like Lapis Lazuli are often found in alluvial deposits. This would provide a way to obtain blue dye on the surface, but is less efficient than mining Lapis Lazuli Ore underground.
Ender Pearl: Endermen die in water. Let's assume that they've been wandering into bodies of water for years and the pearls they drop get incorporated with alluvium. Ender Pearls would be the rarest drop from alluvium for balance reasons.
Please do give me your feedback, support, and constructive criticism.
I like it. I think that alluvium deposits should also be able to drop sand, dirt, and gravel. My reasoning is that they get eroded away on the banks and then get deposited on it.

Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
It's likely that you won't get too much. Also, I made gold much more common than lapis, since nuggets aren't worth that much.
I'll add a question to the poll about whether or not alluvium should be obtainable. Thanks for the input. I intended to make nuggets a little less common, considering that they can be used to make a Potion of Instant Health.
Alluvium shouldn't be obtainable; then the player gets another opportunity to get something valuable from the one block. It'd be like gravel, where you keep putting down the same block and digging it till you get something valuable.

That's what I was worrying about, I'll edit the OP.

Dirt: 20%
Clay Block: 20%
Sand: 20%
Bone: 15%

Gold Nugget: 3.5%
Lapis Lazuli: 2.5%
Ender Pearl: 1.5%
(Percentages are very liable to change)

Kudos to you
[EDIT] never mind i didn't see something
You can pick up the block,it will act like gravel or sandEDIT: Derp, I didn't see you edit.
Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Alluvium: 80%
Bone: 10%
Flint: 7.5%
Gold Nugget: 3.5%
Lapis Lazuli: 2.5%
Ender Pearl: 1.5%
I'd go:
Nothing: 30%
Dirt: 30%
Sand: 20%
Gravel: 7.5%
Flint: 7.5%
Gold Nugget: 4%
Lapis Lazuli: 1%

How about the nothing getting equally split up among everything else if you use a shovel.

Oh, that's a really good idea!!
I'd image the texture to be a dirt block with flecks of various other colours?
