Whenever you use a tool to do something (chopping trees, shoveling dirt, etc.), it's always the same motion: a downwards slice. I can understand it when you're using the pick for example, and the hoe, but the SHOVEL? I propose that Notch add some different animations, so shoveling dirt actually looks authentic. Look at that log in your inventory. Does it look like it was cut from the top or side? And finally, the sword. Many people have suggested that the sword should have WAY more mobility, and I agree. In my opinion, the sword should slash in all directions, in all angles. Whenever you click the left mouse, you don't know which direction it will swing (downward slice, poke, upward slash, etc.). I think that these changes will add more polish to the game; make it seem more professional.
Here's how I think it should be:
Pickax - Same movement
Shovel - Scooping motion from the ground
Ax - Sideways chopping motion
Hoe - Same movement
Sword - Alternating slashes/jabs
As always, these ideas are up for debate. If you wish to post however, don't be barbarians. Capitals and punctuation!
There already is a little bit of variance in the downward slices, but I would love to see a little variance with the tools, especially the shovel and the sword.
Oh, and the downward scoop thing with the shovel could actually be accomplished by flipping the sprite of the shovel across the x-axis. Painterly Pack actually lets you do this.
