Left clicking slashes with it like a sword, while clicking/holding right click "charges" and throws it. When used like a sword, it takes damage just like any other tool. But when it is thrown, 1/3 of it's total possible "health" (not current health) gets removed. If the javelin has less than 1/3 "health" when it is thrown, it will still damage mobs but will break on impact, and disappear. The damage from throwing it should be the same as a diamond sword, but the melee damage the same as a wooden sword. After throwing it and sticking it into a mob, it will be impossible to get it back until the mob is dead.
When thrown, it would turn into a "3d" javelin, just like an arrow. It should have far less range than the bow, maybe only travel 10 blocks at most (thrown at 45 degrees). It can use the same physics as arrows. If you miss your target, you can still pick them up off the ground, just like arrows. Due to the versatility and damage of the javelin, two feathers and an iron ingot are used to build them, so that you must get wood, mine iron, and farm chickens. They could be thrown varying distances depending on how long you "charge" them (like the bow).
Some credits go to securitywyrm:, for the melee/throw concept
I made this suggestion a few days ago, it got deleted (no idea why) but it's relevant here.
How about instead of a javelin, you make it a spear? Left click stabs with it, right click throws it. An easy way to make a ranged weapon before you find string for a bow with a bit more melee range than a sword, but only 2/3 the damage of a sword.
Since farming chickens takes longer then getting some wood I think for every one you make it would only produce 1, but even then people would give up on bows since this would be simpler so there would have to be even more drawbacks.

How about the crafting recipe requires two feathers at the bottom right and left? Besides, these javelins cannot replace bows, as they have the greater range. Mobs only "see" you when they're in a 16 block radius around you. Bows can shoot further than that, but javelins should only have a range of 6-10 blocks.
That would just be too OP... :dry.gif: No one would use swords anymore then, as javelins would do more damage, and be cheaper to make...
If anything, make javelins have 3 uses. Every time you throw it it counts as a use, and then it breaks after 3 uses.

Damn, great idea! I'll quote you in my post.

Crossbow Idea: less damage than the javelin, but more range (still less than bow).

Maybe you should click this?
