I've noticed that when spiders climb, they don't exactly look like the're climbing. A spider's most prominant feature is that they can climb on walls, but minecraft hasn't done a very good job of making them climb well.
Spiders should face the surface they're climbing on, and have an animation for when going from surface to surface.
If they were able to go on ceilings then Notch would have to change the AI pathing, as every mob currently runs straight in your direction and if a spider were under the block you are then it would just sit there without pursuing you.

Then Notch should change the AI pathing. I don't see why it's a big issue if Notch improves the AI. Currently, it is god-awful. I find it more appalling than goatse.
