Here's the thing (In multiplayer):
There is always a small amount of server lag, that's just a fundamental fact of the internet.
We all know the exact time a piece of coal lasts is for 8 stackable items to be smelted. Saplings last for 0.5, and 2 logs last for 3 smeltable items.
However server lag can sometimes make the fuel run out just as the white progress arrow meter is at the last pixel of being completed (for the 8/8, 3/3, or 1/1 item, depending on your fuel source).
This causes the last item to stay in the furnace and not be smelted. This wastes fuel.
I'm asking that all fuel sources last for probably 0.1 seconds longer than they do now. This will not give any extra power to the fuel, but would at least prevent waste. The time can be worked out independently for all fuels (So that sapling wouldn't benefit from this by allowing another item with 10 as fuel, etc).
But if it becomes 1/10 or even 1/20 more burn time, it will burn extra items.
If i put in 64 saplings to smelt 32 iron, i will end up being able to smelt 35 iron (Assuming it's one tick greater) instead of the normal 32 for 64 saplings.
A small change, but game-breaking.
This lag problem happens a bout 1/5 of the time I smelt items in my server, so it's not uncommon. I just think people haven't brought it up, or aren't fuel natzis like I am, and don't care (IE putting 5 or 6 coal into a furnace, with a random number of items and just 'let it burn' without caring).
And how the hell would this 'break the game' if 1/20 longer lasting fuel let saplings burn a couple extra items? Honestly? :sleep.gif:
Think about it. If you do this, then the smelting capacity of each bit of fuel goes up a bit, and when server lag brings that back down to what it is now, then you'll still be wasting fuel in a sense. It's an uphill battle you can't win.
