damn, somebody beat me in posting the idea.
quite similar to anetherus's idea, but i'mma still gonna bring across my ideas.
okay,
First and foremost, I understand that there is no actual solid gameplay or goal for minecraft yet,
but this ideas/suggestions is to further enhance the survival experience of the game.
Minecraft suggestion:
Survival: The elements.
Mother Nature stepping in
Different elements has different kind of effect to the player.
============================================================
Global - Day
Possible effects: Hot?
Effect results: Drains water and energy(food) at a faster rate
Possible solutions: Get hydrated and eat
============================================================
Global - Night
Possible effects: Cold, hyperthermia
Effect results: Freezing, burn more energy(food) to produce heat to warm body
Possible solutions: Get warmth (fire)
============================================================
Global - Rain
Possible effects: Drenched, cold, hyperthermia
Effect results: Burn more energy(food) to produce heat to warm body
Possible solutions: Dry up, Get warmth (fire)
============================================================
Desert
Possible effects: Dehydration
Effect results: Drain water (fastest rate)
Possible solutions: Get hydrated
============================================================
Swamp
Possible effects: Muddy wet terrain?
Effect results: Reduce (~15%) movement speed?
Possible solutions: ?
============================================================
Tundra
Possible effects: Freezing, faster hyperthermia
Effect results: Drop in body temperature, burn more energy(food) to produce heat to warm body
Possible solutions: Get food, get warmth, wear insulation

So, in addition to the existing food/hunger system, you could see i've also suggested the need to drink.
You might wonder, WTF would you want water when there is already a hunger system?
Well, thinking back, people used to say, WTF would you want Hunger system when you will heal when you eat?
The thirst level is just a mere addition to the hunger system, not only they come in a pair, but to balance and add strategic game play too.
ie. Where can i find water source? etc. etc. I wouldn't go in so deep where by you replenish more thirst when u drink Soda then to water. Sometimes too much is no good.
So, thirst level system. Another vital information that needs to be displayed.
However, if were to use the current hud layout, the thirst meter will ideally be above the food right?
When breath and armor meter comes in, that area of your screen will be very heavy, packed with information.
One alternative is have the Food and Water meter inside the "Keyboard: E" Screen:
Why?
Well, its the only screen that show character information right now.
I couldn't formulate something that is feasible right now, so this part is pretty open to any suggestion.
So we've been through with the water. The other new features is also the temperature. Hot, and Cold.
As seen above, there's already 5 meter/bars. Adding 2 more bars might just flood the UI.
So what has been suggested is to use the idea of "debuff" icons such as these:
Hot Cold Hungry Thirsty
*all of the art are subject to changes*
Having the same idea as this awesome mod by Blackguard666, [1.8.1]Hunger warning
the icon(s) will show up at the top of your screen, visually, and as well as, audio-y informing the player.
This is a mockup i made in Photoshop and After Effects:
So, whats happening in that video is, night falls, and the temperature plummets. Your core temperature is dropping. When it hits to a level where it requires your attention, the debuff icon shows up and the audio feedback kicks it.
The icon will remain there and will randoming shiver until you warm yourself up.
As you noticed the video mock up is slightly different from Blackguard666's mod. The Audio feedback is not the avatar is not talking to himself but is a debuff related body audio response, ie: shiver.
"Hot" will produce a "pan" sound *phewwww*;
"Cold" will produce a "shivering" sound *brrrrruuu*;
"Hungry" will produce a "stomach grinning" sound *grrrrrrrrrr*;
"Thristy" will produce a "clear throat/wet throat with silver" sound *(seriously, i dun know how to put it into words)*
Now, with that constrains, new items is required for survival.
I've come out with a few mockups that will help our avatar in their survival.
Camp Fire or
It works similarly like a furnace, but it does not accept coal or larva as fuel.
It has a lifespan, can be refilled with sticks, wood, tree related items
Requires Flint and Steel type items to catch fire *might do a 3D model mockup screenshot*
Hand Drill fire start / Stick fire starter
Works exactly like flint and steel
Shorter durability
Might fail to start fire sometimes (not a must)
Bottle *Material not confirmed, open to suggestions*
*Not going to introduce “plastic” or “polystyrene” material. Too complicated*
It can be used to fill/refilled water.
Minus 1 unit per drink (as see on the image, Empty to Full)
Possibility is endless here, i'm sure i've missed out lots of core items.
Its open to anyone's suggestion.
I also have ideas about biome-unique critters floating in my head, not set into stones yet.
Snakes from desert
Crocs for swamp
They attack
They provides food.
These ideas is mainly inspired from
Signing off for now, getting late, work coming in 5hrs time.
Wow. Really great, well thought out ideas, be a great "option" maybe for the "Realistic" mode, but for regular survival, maybe not. Really good job though!
hmm how do i do poll? lol ty for such quick replies.
Note taken.

yeah... the camp fire works like a furnace, u can cook food on the campfire..
hmm i'll try to work out some visuals to help explain that.
since glass is somewhat hard to obtain, maybe you should be able to drink water with your hands but it would waste the same amount of water and only replenish you 1/4 of the bottle. and we cold just use the 1.9 bottle, as you can drink from it. and options much like difficulty options, you can turn down hunger depletion rate and chill rate ETC.

yeah i liked that
