While there is nothing wrong with Minecraft being predominantly creative in nature, I think that if a few more competitive game modes were included, it would be even more fun, and appeal to an even wider variety of people.
Hunt:
Hunt is a multiplayer game mode designed for 2+ people (although practicality would limit the maximum number of players)
Aim: The aim of the game would be simple - earn the most points. These points would only be awarded for killing other players, or destroying their spawn point (bed).
Details: Each player would start at once, and scatter. For the first in-game day, no points would be awarded for killing other players. Once that day is up, every player would receive an announcement and scoring would begin. Before this, any player would be able to be killed and respawn at the spawn point, but after the game begins, a player may only respawn if he has a bed.
The rest of the game would continue as a mix of building a base that is well hidden, preparing yourself by crafting potions, enchantments, arms, armour and the like, making traps throughout your base and of course hunting.
Scoring:
Ideally, when a player dies, he should drop 'experience' (like mobs), but it would be red instead of green, and completely indestructible. Each point orb would be worth a single point.
If you destroy a player's bed (and thus their spawn point) you would get between 10 and 20 points, depending on how successful that player is.
If a player dies after their bed has been destroyed, they are removed from the game. Ideally they should spawn as a ghost of sorts, unable to interact with the environment at all, but able to fly and observe.
if, after a player's bed is destroyed, they manage to make another one and set it as their spawn point before they are killed, they are back in the game.
I think this mode has the potential to be hugely fun and addictive, as people conceive convoluted ideas for traps, secret bases and all that...
So what do you all think? Suggestions? How could this be improved??
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to include this:
This idea is a little bit similar to another (great idea) I've seen suggested Here
Essentially this is a free-for-all version, with a greater emphasis placed on hunting other players. It would be more subtle and sort of 'cat and mouse' style.
A good idea. Very similar to what my friends and I do from time to time on our server.
Suggestions:
Extend the grace period. In my experience, one day is nothing and leaves you easily open for attack from the player who decides to rush and got lucky at night with some string and arrows. A week might work, we've done 3 days with good success.
If beds will be that important/valuable, give them a catch. Make it so that beds have to be created above a certain layer, or even built in an area where the sun/moon shines on it.
Do all players drop 1 point? Or does killing someone on a spree yield all of their obtained points? I would suggest something like DotA, where you get 200g for a kill, and each kill they've received in a life increases their bounty by a certain amount. This won't benefit the person on a spree, other than give them some glory, however, it will make taking that guy covered in iron armor 2 days in worth it. PS First Blood bonus + Quake sound bits.
I like the ghost mode, but with the addition of debuffs I would LOVE zombies instead. Instead of spawning and observing, they have a sleuth of debuffs. Slowness, weakness, and maybe poison. They can try and get revenge, but they probably won't.
Sounds like a cool idea
So if you die and your bed is missing.
You can't respawn?
Might be better that you go back to the main area of the server.
If like a big section is made for them to play this game. and maybe within the area of fences.
Because if they can't respawn. that would be kinda stupid
So it should be an plugin that can be used on servers.
If you don't want to particpate in this game. You can then, but 2 players is needed to start the game. You can get more players of course.
I like this idea. But there should be a time limit on it.
Yeah, if someone destroys your bed then kills you, you're kicked.
EDIT: not kicked, turned into a ghost. /EDIT
I don't really think a time limit would work- especially if it's down to a handful of players, and each player is spending heaps of time coming up with awesome traps.

Extending the grace period would be fine. Maybe it could be configurable, depending on how many players you have, or how quick you want the game to flow?

I like the idea of being above a certain layer, but I want to include as few limitations on it as possible. Remember, you spawn at your bed, so if it's too out of the way or something, that sucks for you every time you spawn...

I like the idea of changing points. There's no dis-benefit I can think of for this.

Sounds good, but I get the feeling that being slow and unweildy would just frustrate people. If people accept the fact that they're 'dead', I think they could enjoy flying around and looking at other people's bases, watching their mates get hunted etc...
Thankyou for all your feedback! It sounds great. I think this mode really has potential.

I think that's a great idea. Otherwise you'd have petty people being sore losers...
