With 1.9 comes breeding.
In order to breed, you give 2 animals of the same species wheat, they go into love mode, and then they breed.
After a long week, you have a successful animal farm. But you need diamonds, and you'll be gone for a while.
You don't want your animals to stop breeding.
My solution? The Hay Block!
Crafted:
Makes a block of hay, which attracts passive mobs (No squids!).
When a mob gets close enough, it takes a bite out of it and goes into love mode. If another animal does the same, they breed without you even near! But the hay block doesn't last forever. After 30 bites, it disappears (Oh no!) But then you get back from your expedition and feed them again (Yaaay)
I like the idea, but the hay block itself has been suggested countless times and Notch even considered making it once.
I really do like the use of it you are suggesting though.

Maybe like a hay slab?
It would break when stepped on or something, that'd be cool.
