Ender pearls will cause 2.5 hearts of damage each time you use them to teleport. This is a good way of balancing out the power of teleportation.
However it would be nice if there was a way of teleporting without taking damage, under certain limited conditions. This would allow players to play teleportation based games and sports without draining their health.
I suggest that teleportation should deal no damage if your ender pearl hits an obsidian block, since it's already established that obsidian aids in teleportation. If your pearl hits any other kind of block you still take damage, but if it hits obsidian you arrive unharmed.
Since obsidian is fairly rare in nature this wouldn't let you abuse ender pearls while exploring (although it would come in handy once in a while). But if you set up a special teleportation based puzzle map or sport arena, with obsidian blocks in specific places for players to teleport to, players could tele-hop around over and over again without being unharmed.
Yeah, golden apples aren't a viable option if you want to play a sport like Teleball or Warpgoal.
I just made up those names for non-existent sports, but I could easily imagine games that involve two teams of players quickly teleporting over and over again all around an arena. Or a Portal type challenge map where you have to figure out how to hit the obsidian targets to proceed. In that kind of sport or map even a golden apple's regeneration might not heal you fast enough. Not to mention how ungodly expensive that would be.
Perhaps gold blocks should also allow damage-free teleportation as well as obsidian? It would be nice if there was a teleport block that can be moved by pistons, since that would add some additional options to puzzle map creators.
