Mojang would NEVER add:
1: Motor Boats. Too Modern.
2: Huge Ships without first making a big vehicle for land
Other than the face that this would probably never be in vanilla minecraft...
MAKE A MOD! this is an amazing idea! Multiplayer sea battles would be freaking amazing.
Tell it to the Powered Minecart, Powered Rail, etc...
Why? There's plenty of ways to get around on land already.
I support this but to be honest I wouldn't use it too often except in multiplayer. Lets face it there isn't much reason for water exploration currently.
Well if more boats were added there would be reason for Mojang to add more to the Oceans. Maybe they could be added together in a future update. We've had the Adventure Update, now we need the Explorers update!
I don't want this. Big boats would be cool, but it just sort of has that "mod" feel to it. The only addition in boats should be iron-plated boats, for going across lava.
As much as i love this, i think boats similar to the Zeppelin mod would fit in minecraft better, simply because for this, mojang would have to program quite a bit for each type of boat and the additions, and it also limits the creativity in boats a bit (not much, seeing how i can still place blocks in the ship) but i think more people would be happy if they could make their model boats and sail them across the seas simply after making a steering wheel, rather than a slightly confusing crafting recipe.
TL;DR: I liked the idea, but i think it would change a bit much in minecraft and the way the zeppelin mod boats are made would fit in better.
I love this idea it but it makes me sad Jeb and Mojang don't care enough about our ideas to look on the forums every once in a while and read some of them : [

If they don't look at the forums, then how do you explain the number of suggestions that have been implimented? Not to mention that people who work with Mojang, like Dinnerbone, are active on these boards and actually post at times.
You haven't really answered an important question yet (or maybe I haven't found it yet); how. Will it be in-game (like the construction of ships in the zeppelin mod) or be GUI based. In my opinion a ring (Like a giant nether portal) should have to be built first. It should then be filled with scafolding(how IS that spelt) and then right clicking on it will bring up a GUI in which a range of different size cuboids can be moved about and be resized. "Groves" can also placed about the ship. Once that is done a "schematic" is produced.
Said schematic can be opened and looked at and it will display the ship the same way thewithout the ability to edit. Wood(and/or other material) cost would also be displayed. Schematics can be traded between players and/or organizations as well as replicated.
Using a schematic again on the scafolding would generate a number of "frames" which must be filled with wood before the ship can be launched (said frames would generate directly in front of the scafolding). Lastly any weapons are installed (Cannons, ballista, caged creeper haulers, etc)
Having just typed that out I now realise that it doesn't really fit the mine craft theme. Im sure someone will think of an improvement On that happy note I wish you good luck with bring attention to this. (When I found it it was on the first page of suggestions, so good luck (again))

This is awesome we need more ways to travel on minecraft and we need better ships. And the thought of a pirate battle seems cool, mojang needs to make bigger oceans and some huge water mobs because with this I could go on long voyages on the sea for days, fight large creatures and come back home with the loot.
Just say you're willing to participate, or, if you like the way most people do it, say /signed or something.
There was a modder that was interested in doing it, but he was just an average modder and fell into a lot of gumption traps. Another modder decided to put my idea on his 'queue' a few months ago -- I don't think he'll ever get around to it, though.

Check out Boats Evolved; the fancy huge customizable boats Notch tweeted about brought to life!

This fine person right here.

Interesting, but neither his profile nor his website tells me very much about him
You haven't really read a very important link yet.
10000% support.
This is amazing!!!!
Please put that in spoiler tags, thank you.
You also forgot to mention the amendments
