I don't know if this has been suggested before but:
Maybe add an icebreaker upgrade. With that upgrade, your boat/ship would be able to travel through icy rivers, destroying the ice, but without taking damage.
This would make traveling through snow biomes a lot easier, because you would not have to leave your boat everytime you come across ice.
Yep:

- Craftable ship components should have been expanded. In addition to a Galley, an Anchor component (probably most vital) is also one of them. Also proposed by the community are tables, crows' nests (That basket thing on the top of masts), icebreakers, and if the NPC crew idea is implemented, a sea captain's desk to chart courses for the helmsman.

I think since you'd have to have doors, chests, and other interactable things on the bigger ships, maybe you would have to right click the main door (entrance) to get into the boat area. From here you couldn't get out (and visa-versa. you couldn't get in except for the main door), but could use the chests, engines, doors, beds, etc.
Also on the more advanced ships you could have a "nav center" type thing. You could put a map in and click somewhere on the accessible ocean (from your current location) and when you went and did things on the boat, it would automaticly go there. On that note (if your feeling oldy-worldy) you could hire a villager or something to operate the wheel and utilizing the same function.
I just had another idea for all of the boats. On each block by default you could place blocks only (chests, doors, beds, blocks, etc) but you could craft a chair for passengers, a platform for sails (or other middle-located propulsion systems), etc.
Then you could also have (now this is getting a little farfetched but im gonna keep going anyway) a boat editing interface similar to MCEdit that allowed you to edit where your engines needed to be located, which way "forward" was, or create a custom boat blueprint entirely. I understand that hardly any of this would be implemented into the game (if any of it is) or the mod (if it comes) but I'm just throwing out ideas here.
All in all, this seems like a really cool idea and I hope mojang sees it. I didn't read the entire post, I'm too lazy, but this has a lot of potential in minecraft vanilla, or a mod. Great job!
So in the latest snapshot Mojang has made alterations to boats by making them faster and more maneuverable. If only they would be able to see this thread!

I also support this! I think galleons might be going overboard, but going up to a carrack isn't such a bad idea. This also means that you could essentially be a sea traveler if you so wish! It could essentially be your "house" if you choose to explore the world in such a vessel! You wouldn't have to necessarily worry about dying and respawning way back at your house/outpost with no way to get back to your stuff in time if you do die on an adventure.
I don't think cannons are necessary but, then again, I know a lot of people would like it. PvP isn't really my thing though, personally.
Brilliant idea! This could also influence Survival Islands, like if you get a full stack of diamond or something you can build a boat and leave the island!
This is an awesome idea. I could see there being a few different ship types though, so for instance, you might build first a hull that is a certain size, then pick if you want a warship, cargo ship, or transport ship, then, the corresponding ship of that size is created. For example, you craft a large hull, select warship, and you get a ship of the line. Or you craft a large hull and select cargo ship, you get a merchantman. Might be a bit complicated, but I think it is a pretty good idea. You get a diamond sword for your idea!!:DSWORD:
This is one of the best ideas I have ever seen. I know that I would (in creative mode) spawn in/craft a Galleon and sail the blocky seas.
Suggestion: Put them in the creative inventory.

Another idea-crew golems. You can assign each one a task, for example, cannons, rigging, or engine rooms. Made like a snow golem, but with wood planks instead of snow.

I do like the idea of these golems for working on ships, but I think that, depending on the task that it's given, should be made with different materials. Maybe you could craft a general golem item and, say, to get a cleaning golem, you'd craft a bucket into it, or something along those lines.

Why don't you put a poll on this and just ask:
Do you want bigger boats in vanilla MineCraft? Y/N.
I've seen this thread forever and honestly I don't care. I'd love to be about to vote "No" and be done with it. Look, no offense to the idea, somewhat bigger boats would be fine. But this is waaaay too complicated for vanilla. It would be the single most complicated addition to the game so far and most people don't even touch the ocean. Now you might say, "Well, bigger boats would give people a reason to use the ocean!" No, it wouldn't because oceans are still big, boring and only inhabiting by squid. Unless all kinds of more important things get added to the game first to make the ocean interesting, boats will always be rarely used option.
I know you hate it, but this idea screams Mod to me. Like trains or planes - it's only a small group of people that really want it.

TT2000, you are genius.

A tweet would work better, and in order for it to work efficiently we'd all have to do it at the same date & time.
Does anyone want to do that? Post your advocacy and discuss a date!

WELL, ACTUALLY, NOT REALLY A WARDEN.
I'M DISAPPOINTING.
