I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. Are you talking about the 'water hiding effect' I mentioned in my idea? What do you mean by a '2 x 2' boat? Are you sure you actually looked at the idea in the GetSatisfaction page? They're not constructed out of blocks.
Agreed with thesaurusrex this is not impossible to do what he wants. Also if you did have knowledge of java you would know that lots of things in it are possible programming water would not be hard in the slightest bit modding minecraft for it yes, having to revamp the system probably but no it cannot work is very much a no
This topic is indeed popular, however this kinda concept of a larger boat would never work in the world of minecraft due to the blocks. If this boat took up multiple blocks, this could be a major problem considering water currents. Like for a 2 by 2 boat for example, should there be one block that has a current and another is calm as the boat enters the current with one block, What happens to the other 3 adjacent blocks? It would be a time consuming process to figure out how something like that would work especially with how people can place boats in water. If you could place a boat much larger than the water available would the boat fall apart on contact with the water? I am not trying to ruin your idea or anything, but as person with knowledge of java programing, This idea is highly flawed and would never truely work in Minecraft.
Sorry folks.
but... we already have a boat (small one)
wouldn't the same concept work for a larger one!!! and the idea did not say the boats are "built" from blocks the idea suggested that the boats get made like the small one (as a big item/thingy :P)
Wow. you really worked hard on this. But the boats shouldn't go too fast..... It would be too easy to cross oceans... bUt anyway THIS SHOULD BE ADDED TO MINECRAFT!

Pretty much. I've pointed out twice before that this entire concept is impractical, but people continue foaming at the mouth of it regardless.

Forgive me, but I don't remember you posting on this topic at all. And King of Dragons' reasons for this being impractical, to put it bluntly, makes no sense.

to address kingofdragons concern of what happens when a 2x2 boat hits a 1x1 current, it is affected by 50% of the current, as opposed to a boat being affected 100% by it.
I would love to see this come into the game. It would fulfill my hopes that were let down with the adventure update. I would especially like to see it in vanilla, for ease of access to multiplayer.

I have other people's signatures stuck off, so I can't ever seem them. Oh well.
Mushroom islands are common enough if you find an ocean. The trouble is finding the ocean since it tends to be a good distance from spawn (2-3k blocks.) If you can see land than it's probally a lake or river not an ocean.

sheesh Ok i follow this topic and check it everyday waiting for the message that says yay it was finally implemented. Here is the thing. It wouldn't work with the current minecraft water system i agree with that. But hey it's scripting you can do anything you want with it so "it wouldn't work" doesn't make any sense I mean really people there is stuff like this in battlefield 1942 it would work in this. and I tried to work it as a mod but i couldn't well that just means you aren't as good as a group of highly trained programmers. So please stop just throwing the thread to trash because you don't think it would work. Because it can if notch wants to add it in. So the problem is getting him or jeb to want it
I don't know if this has been suggested before but:
Maybe add an icebreaker upgrade. With that upgrade, your boat/ship would be able to travel through icy rivers, destroying the ice, but without taking damage.
This would make traveling through snow biomes a lot easier, because you would not have to leave your boat everytime you come across ice.

Yep:
Quote from name-"Idea Amendment" »
- Craftable ship components should have been expanded. In addition to a Galley, an Anchor component (probably most vital) is also one of them. Also proposed by the community are tables, crows' nests (That basket thing on the top of masts), icebreakers, and if the NPC crew idea is implemented, a sea captain's desk to chart courses for the helmsman.

I think since you'd have to have doors, chests, and other interactable things on the bigger ships, maybe you would have to right click the main door (entrance) to get into the boat area. From here you couldn't get out (and visa-versa. you couldn't get in except for the main door), but could use the chests, engines, doors, beds, etc.
Also on the more advanced ships you could have a "nav center" type thing. You could put a map in and click somewhere on the accessible ocean (from your current location) and when you went and did things on the boat, it would automaticly go there. On that note (if your feeling oldy-worldy) you could hire a villager or something to operate the wheel and utilizing the same function.
I just had another idea for all of the boats. On each block by default you could place blocks only (chests, doors, beds, blocks, etc) but you could craft a chair for passengers, a platform for sails (or other middle-located propulsion systems), etc.
Then you could also have (now this is getting a little farfetched but im gonna keep going anyway) a boat editing interface similar to MCEdit that allowed you to edit where your engines needed to be located, which way "forward" was, or create a custom boat blueprint entirely. I understand that hardly any of this would be implemented into the game (if any of it is) or the mod (if it comes) but I'm just throwing out ideas here.
All in all, this seems like a really cool idea and I hope mojang sees it. I didn't read the entire post, I'm too lazy, but this has a lot of potential in minecraft vanilla, or a mod. Great job!
