I just read this on the site you linked to, and by notch, this is genius! If there is ever a mod anything like this, I'm downloading it. Also very fitting since we have BIG ASS OCEANS.
Some guy builds a Galleon with max armor and tons of beds (Basically a cruise ship.) and uses steam power. Then he gets all cocky and decides to ram a frozen sea. "This thing's unsinkable!". Yeah. Right.
And that reminds me, will people in boats be able to swim out of sinking ("dead") boats just like if they were hopping out of a sinking Minecart or will the boats suck people down? Or will it be a chance thing? Or what?
He might have a better chance with an icebreaker module!
Yes of course, you can jump/swim out of a sinking boat. I don't see why you couldn't. It's not like you're locked in there -- you can already freely roam about the ship, and if you put yourself in a mob slot then you can always get yourself out (Or perhaps once the ship starts sinking it forces you off and you can't get into one again)

Check out Boats Evolved; the fancy huge customizable boats Notch tweeted about brought to life!
You can create ships any shape you want, and it also supports redstone!
Just to add a more interesting discussion aside from "there is a mod for that"
When I designed S&B mod, I always through about simplicity, not having complex recipes to make a new boat, but reusing all of the Minecraft building blocks to create ships in any shape you want. I am very happy with the results, since one can reuse good building ideas from "traditional Minecraft". For instance, one can create TNT cannons in the ship.
Also, an interesting idea I saw discussed here is to have pre-made ships. I guess it wouldn't be hard to add that feature in the future, since S&B is very flexible to create different ships.

That's really cool!
But, not to rat on your mod or anything, I've seen it before and I like it very much, but the Ships & Boats mod has ships composed of blocks. Not that this is a bad thing, this is very good in a mod. But if you were to take a look at the link I posted in the OP, you'd see that the ships were entities just like the default boat, not blocks. I've discussed this many times why I think entity hulls would be better than block hulls in the stock Minecraft, the most important one being that entity ships fit in more, as the default boat is already an entity.

you know what, that would be an epic idea, imagine sailing into he seas living in the boat with all your freinds, on a multiplayer server building up ypur boat as you stop to get resources to bring back onto the boat for antoher trip around the seas, and figthing other boats. That would be epic lol

I see your point. I guess it would be good to have both things. I think block ships would be better for big ships, since blocks are coarse-grained; entity-ships are better for smaller ships since they are finer-grained
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! i've been looking for something like this FOOR-EV-VUR!! (compliments of The Sandlot) if i was a modder i would jump on board with this! but sadly none of the sites i've looked up have properly shown me how to code... but otherwise i totally support this mod!!!
This is such an awesome idea, I can't believe Jeb has not added it to the game.
Can someone please post on Jeb's twitter about this?
Imagine packing up all your stuff and sailing for a more interesting land in a cog.
Or in SMP, having heated ship to ship battles, with maybe one faction (in hardcore pvp servers) having dominance over the seas.
This is just plain awesome
