Instead of having to go in a puny boat everywhere, why not a ship?
The basic idea is a large wooden (or even iron) object, (at least 10 blocks long) that allows you to place beds, furnaces, chests, crafting tables, basically anything. They can only be used for transportation over water, of course. It would float, maybe have a sail, and would be completely composed of (when already crafted and ready to use) a wooden or iron structure that is smooth, and not blocky, a sail if wooden, or engine room if metal, and rooms. The walls would be thiner than a normal wooden block, and would be impossible to obtain without inventory hacking. Of course, there would be a control room for, metal ships, or wooden wheel to steer, for wooden ships, and would need coal, charcoal, logs, anything that can burn, in general, to run if metal, or rely on the wind (actual wind in minecraft or just the altitude) to move. Since the ship wouldn't be built by hand (placing blocks in the water) and be too big to just place in the water, it would need a new kind of crafting table to be made.
Crafting:
Giant Workbench
I P I
P W P
I P I
I= iron ingot
P= wooden plank
W= Workbench
After being crafted, it will be 2 blocks long, 2 blocks wide, and 1 block tall. When right-clicked, an even larger crafting space will be provided, 9 blocks long and 5 blocks tall. Each block will have a small drawing on it, all making a ship, indicating where the basic components for a ship would go, more or less. The ship itself is crafted in 4 main pieces, The hull, which is basically the exoskeleton of the ship and working space, propulsion systems, which include either the sail, the engine, or even both, the steering system, where you steer, the rudder, or being able to rotate the sail, and the holds compartments and superstructure, which is basically rooms, storage space, and even an engine room.
For metal ships, you will need to to craft the following:
Metal Workbench
I D I
F G F
I D I
G= Giant workbench
I= Iron ingot
F= Furnace
D= Diamond
It is more costly, but produces better, smaller ships that are faster, more powerful, but runs on coal. The crafting space would be the same as the giant workbench, and would be composed of the same main parts, including another one: equipment, such as cranes, and lifeboats. (Cranes can only lift a designated slab of the ship, and can carry cargo, such as chests, and players. It cannot cary individual blocks, and doesn't place then on the ground to build.
I know that this has already been suggested, but I don't know where it is in the forum exactly, or who, but please show support!

Your link shows more or less what i mean, with the boats, and great for SSP. I meant in SMP, where some people just travel around, for the hell of it. Then, they sometimes come back, with a ship loaded with cargo from across the ocean. Also, other people would be able to come, maybe to set up a "colony" or secondary base, or camp, etc. there, f it is rich, and you come and go whenever, taking large hauls of materials, all at once.
I was discussing this with some others on my server last night. I own a PvP Castle Wars server, and our escape Armada is a dock with those puny little boats. It would be cool if you could use 3 boats, 3 wooden planks and some wool to make a big sailboat. And one that you could stand on to ride while another player drives it, so that one may shoot arrows or throw snowballs or eggs. Ect.

That is exactly what mine said, only without the consequence of a tall boat so a normal dock would work for mine, yours need a huge port to work.

Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.

well, it would be designed for ocean biomes, so like 2 or (MAX) 4 blocks deep to fit, its not a submarine... Thought that would be interesting. :biggrin.gif:
