The Staff of Blocks is a staff that will be crafted like this:

The Staff of Blocks can do a few things.
1. Move Mobs and Blocks
2. Shoot holding Block or Mob at aim location
3. Lift a whole chunk
4. Have x-ray vision (Press GRAVE ~)
Hope this is a good idea!
No to lifting a whole chunk. That's a lot of data to move and a lot of chances for an epic crash/grief.
Outside of that, have it based on a very low durability/use. Since it is BASICALLY a wooden tool, give it the 60 durability common with other wooden tools. Using the staff would consume a durability. Using x-ray vision would consume 1 durability for the specific block x-rayed. If the player uses the x-ray on an already x-rayed block, the block behind becomes x-rayed as well and another durability is consumed.
In this way, the item is not completely overpowered. Still, the easy of construction makes it difficult to balance. At the point where the player encounters redstone; they have already killed a fair number of skeletons and acquired copious amounts of wood. Even though a staff has only 60 durability, the player can easily create 5 or 6 staves with a single harvest of redstone. This easily equals to iron-quality durability across multiple items.
Basing the tool around much more difficult-to-find objects like lapis lazuli blocks or glowstone would give it a balancing edge much required for the tool to be effective.
Aww, don't feel like that. I wasn't attacking you nor was I trying to belittle you. I try to look at multiple facets of a suggestion and ways of improving it on a constant basis to where it has become second nature. I don't require or ask that you do the same.
Under it's current implementation and technical merits; you are completely correct! This item is currently brokenly overpowered.
As others say, ridicolously OP and lifting chunks would most likely crash the game, or lag it to death.
The biggest problem is that the staff is to easy to make as the others said and redstone is really common... I could probably make 64 of those staffs within my normal playing period...
I guess you could use it to move an ore block from where you found it to the surface, but on pvp servers the ability to instantly tear into an opponent's obsidian bunker might be a bit annoying given the low cost of materials. Can you explain exactly what shooting bocks/mobs at where your cursor is would do? Would it hurt anything it hit? Would it place the block?
