I have two suggestions for better defenses for your base - the Doom Capacitor and the Beam Projector.
Both of these suggestions require Power Crystals to operate.
There are three kinds of Power Crystals. The first is the Freeze Crystal. It is crafted like this:
where is a snow block.
The second crystal is the Thunder Crystal. It is crafted like this:
The third crystal is the Fire Crystal. It is crafted like this: where is a lava bucket.
The Doom Capacitor is crafted like this:
[] [] where is a gold block and is a crystal of your choice.
Doom Capacitors emit smoke and fire particles regardless of their type. The only difference in appearance between types is the color. All Doom Capacitors will shock mobs or players that come within 3 blocks.
Doom Capacitors crafted with a Freeze Crystal deal 2.5 hearts of damage to any player or mob that comes within 3 blocks. Additionally, any target struck by it will move at 25% normal speed for 15 seconds.
Doom Capacitors crafted with a Thunder Crystal will simply deal 5 hearts of damage to any player or mob that comes within 3 blocks from it. However, any player wearing Gold or Iron armor will be instantly killed, due to the metal conducting the electricity.
Doom Capacitors crafted with a Fire Crystal will deal 4 hearts of damage to any target that comes within 3 blocks. Any target struck by it will also be set on fire. They will also begin to emit many fire and smoke particles (which will probably blind them).
Beam Projectors are crafted like this: where is redstone dust.
Beam Projectors, when powered by Redstone, constantly emit a beam of light with varying effects. All beams emit a light level of 15 (full light).
Beam Projectors crafted with a Freeze Crystal slow targets caught in their beam much like Cobwebs. They will deal 1 heart of damage per second to targets caught in the beam. The beam from these Beam Projectors disappears at a distance of 30 blocks.
Beam Projectors crafted with a Thunder Crystal blast targets in the direction of the beam, to a distance of about 50 blocks. They deal 4 hearts of damage to the target. The launching effect works on Sand, Gravel, Arrows, and TNT as well, so it can be used to create a cannon. The beam from this Beam Projector disappears at a distance of 20 blocks.
Beam Projectors crafted with a Fire Crystal deal no damage, but set the target on fire. They also incinerate a random item in the target's inventory, if it is a player. Obsidian, Water Buckets, and Lava Buckets are never incinerated.
That concludes my suggestion. If you like it, please click the green + on the bottom right of my post.

Seems good as a mod but to complicated for regular minecraft we dont realy need defenses because there arnt enough hostile mobs at night to be using all this stuff to kill them

The general point of this is mostly to stop griefers from getting into your base, not to kill mobs.
No, but it is less useful. And by the way, running around holding either one of these things won't do anything. You have to place it to get the effect.
It may be okay, but it would be better as a mod, methinks. It just doesn't seem... Minecrafty. Who am I to judge what's minecrafty, if you guys want it, go for it.

Like i said before This would be good as a mod not in vanilla.

Though, considering the direction that Minecraft has been going recently (magic, potions, enchanting) many things that would seem "mod-ish" have been put into Vanilla.

So it is pretty much useless in singleplayer?
