We've all seen what the new lighting system is- it makes transitions between day and night more smooth.
With this lighting system in place, Notch shouldn't have a hard time programming moving 'gradual' lights.
My suggestion is...ADD A HEADLAMP! No more placing torches everywhere to light up stuff! No more needing to make your shelter crowd up with torches at every block! The Headlamp wouldn't be powered by conventional means, like Coal, it'll be powered by Redstone, so it'll provide a weaker, but more mobile version of the torch (or lamps, as Notch is adding). It will have two modes: One, it provides a narrow, but strong projection of light in front of you, or two, it provides a weaker projection of light around you.
Anyways, comment and tell me if this is a good idea! Thanks! (don't know why I'm making a lot of posts today)
If you don't place torches everywhere you go, monsters will spawn while you're not there with your headlamp.
So this wouldn't save you from putting torches down...
Well, it's more of a mining tool than a lighting tool, so to speak. I just thought up of something: There could be a variation that burns all 'undead' mobs, like Zeds and Skeletons, but might require more resources. Just saying.
That's not a bad idea. I have to agree, a more accessible form of lighting is needed.
How about when you are holding torches, they provide light to the surrounding area, essentially allowing you to carry a portable light source around. You can still place them, but it's not as necessary.
It's more of a mining tool, like I said. Is that a diamond vein down there? Whip out your HL, turn it all the way to 'beam' mode, and find out! You don't have to go closer to see, and risk your life!
This has been posted 7043 times but it is a good idea! as a mod!
it would be way to overpowered and should burn 10 coal per 4th minute!
also a lot of diamonds would be fair like 8 diamond blocks and 1 lapis.
You could have a more powerful coal-based HL that consumes (char)coal, or you could have a infinite Redstone powered HL! Ideas, ideas, ideas!
There are currently mods that will do this, but I believe its somewhat inevitable that some kind of official mobile light source will be added eventually.
It would probably make the most sense if it was powered by coal given the somewhat medieval theme of Minecraft, but it should definitely have very limited range and the light it gives off should do nothing to stop monsters spawning even as close as right next to you. That way rather than a means of getting light on the cheap it becomes a more valuable tool for those times when your on your travels and you see a cave you want to duck into for a quick rummage instead of having to whack torches everywhere first.
Maybe it should only be a tool for Adventure mode.

Cool story bro!

Oh, so that's what it is...thanks!
Got it.
