I have no idea if this has already been suggested.. And I realize Notch has stated no guns, but when I started using the bow and arrow after it was nerfed (or balanced, in my opinion) I had an idea I'm somewhat iffy on, muskets.
Or.
Now the catch with a musket is it doesn't fire like a bow does. It carries one Iron ball (which can be made from an iron ingot, or three from one ingot.) and must be reloaded every shot, which could be done in the 2x2 grid.
My original thought to reload it would be Musket + Gunpowder = Packed Musket, Packed musket + Iron ball = Loaded musket.
The shot can follow similar physics to an arrow, perhaps fire a bit farther. I haven't measured distance, but if I recall, Flintlock muskets have an effective range of about 300 feet, which would be a bit much. Matchlock muskets were most effective around 50-60 feet.
Anyway, it's just an idea I thought of. I had heard Notch was planning on adding some sort of bosses, maybe, in the future. I thought a bit of upgraded firepower would help, but I didn't want to carry an actual gun. So, why not a musket?
Score one for you! A fully charged bow can pach quite a punch.
->If someone needs muskets trough it may check out Balkon's Weapon mod. Problem sloved =D
I'm not denying, nor complaining about the bow and arrow. I'm simply suggesting an upgraded weapon.
The best example I can think of is to compare a bow and arrow to swords, there's wood, stone, iron, diamond.
And for a bow and arrow there's.. a bow and arrow, and it's not all that difficult to obtain one. The key flaw in my idea is the obvious, the bow and arrow is quite powerful, there's no need for an upgraded weapon. But the bow is so easy to obtain (I've made one in my first night multiple times.) that it's almost game breaking. Even with the charge up time, it's still effectivly "endgame" once you obtain it, in terms of combat.
The main reason I even attempt suggesting such, is because Notch stated he would like to, at one point, add "boss" monsters to minecraft. Perhaps these bosses, if ever added, would be more durable, or if the engine allows, resistant to a bow and arrow. In which case, a musket may prove more useful.
It's just an idea, and a harmless one at that. I can't see a bow and arrow harming an enderdragon to be honest.
@Lemonater: I have never laughed so hard after reading a post in my life, not to offend. The presentation was awesome. I see your point, jumping from bow and arrow to musket might be a bit of a stretch, can't blame me for trying though.
Yes, this has been suggested before (in fact, this is one of the MOST SUGGESTED items in the game which Notch has already denied outright.) This is why we ask that members search for ideas before posting them.

Search for Muskets.
Let me apologize (Because after searching for muskets before making this post, I got no results. Apparently the search works differently from what I'm used to.) I'm not asking for PEWOEPWEOPWEOWEPOEW. I'm asking for a slow reloading weapon, that after you fire, you must obtain cover. And reload. In my simulations, it took me 3.5 seconds to reload the "false musket" during which, I was immobile, and a blew up.
Now, I can understand if you're annoyed, I would be too. But after reading a few of the posts, and realizing the error in my "headstrong leap into faith", well I'm sorry, I'll leave it at that.

The difficulty here is: I've seen the implementation you're referring to, and am afraid that even as you have explained it... It's already been suggested.
Also, how would reverting from a no-charge-time to full-charge-time item be a pure upgrade. It seems like a lateral transition instead of a pure upgrade.

Now if you excuse me I have to go wash off the failure that Yoshi pointed out to me.
